South films have had a great impact on the audience and on cinema, which has inspired Hindi directors to remake films for their market. Several films have been in the works for years and most recently in 2023 we saw Shehzada, Selfie and Bholaa. Another remake added to the list is Gumraah starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Mrunal Thakur. The latest murder mystery released is a remake of the 2019 Tamil film Thadam. The film is inspired by real-life murder cases involving two identical twins who leave the investigating police officers confused and misled.

What are you talking about?

Investigating police officer Shivani Mathur played by Mrunal Thakur is assigned to investigate a murder case and to find the killer she finds a suspect Arjun Segal but later learns about the second suspect Suraj Rana and they are identical twins played by Aditya Roy Kapur . As she searches for evidence of the real killer, she is confused as all the evidence matches both suspects. Things get complicated for her and it’s interesting to see who the real killer is. Gumraah is produced by T-Series and Cine 1 Studios.

What’s new?

The second half of the murder mystery takes a fascinating turn. The investigation begins and the case becomes tangled between evidence of two identical twins. As things fall apart for the investigating officers, it’s fascinating to see how they cope when the evidence matches both suspects. Mrunal Thakur aka Shivani Mathur is confused to know the truth and till the end the only thing that will keep you addicted to the story is the curiosity to know who committed the crime. The performance of Aditya Roy Kapur who plays a dual role will leave you impressed, Mrunal Thakur gave a great performance as an officer and Ronit Roy who has always wowed the audience with his acting continued to do the same with his role in the film. Aditya Roy Kapur played a double role for the first time and handled the role of two different characters and personalities. He has wowed as an innocent civil engineer and equally wowed in a completely opposite role. Helmed by Vardhan Ketkar, the direction is pleasing to the eyes and the background score connects with the story.

What is not?

The first half is very slow, the movie starts with a murder and as you want to know the ending, the makers have dragged the back story of the suspects too long. This could have been cleared up in less time, making the film more relatable to the audience. While you’re waiting to find out the real suspect until the second half, you’ll already be predicting it.

Judgment

With the evolution of OTT, audiences have curtailed their visits to the theater, preferring to watch movies in the comfort of their homes. Their taste in content has also changed. Gumraah makes a perfect OTT watch given the content fit for digital space. However, if you are a fan of Aditya Roy Kapur or Mrunal Thakur, then you can watch it in theaters once just for their acting. However, the film lived up to the title, misleading the officers until the end. Bollywood Life gives the film 2.5 stars.
