What’s new?

A tale like this needs a powerhouse like that of Rani Mukerji. Her performance in the film makes us realize why we miss her so much on the big screen. She effortlessly carried the character of Mrs. Chatterjee and will make you feel every emotion from every scene. Of course, there are highs and lows, but overall Rani Mukerji has managed to deliver a performance that will leave you enthralled for days. There is a perfect rhythm to the flow of emotions. At first she is aggressive, but in recent years there is a timidity in her character that comes out after being so emotionally drained due to the battle. But she holds on to hope and is ready to knock on any door to get back to her children. Anirban Bhattacharya plays the role of Rani Mukerji’s husband and his character is such that it will leave you furious. His performance manages to elicit a reaction from the audience, so a job well done. The narration of the story is smooth and the script is clear. There are a few scenes that will literally make your heart ache while there are a few scenes that will make you sing your praises. Neena Gupta has a very small but powerful role in the film. Jim Sarb has a key role as the lawyer and does well. Amit Trivedi’s music is subtle and captures the mood of the film beautifully.

What is not?

Many may find it difficult to stay connected with the film as several dialogues are hushed in Bengali. The story concentrates on Mrs. Chatterjee’s struggle, but there are many parallel threads that remain open. What happens with the divorce? What is the background of the domestic violence case etc. There are a few loose threads that could have been avoided. Also, given that the story is based on true events, it turns out to be a one-sided narrative and makes you wonder what if.

Verdict:

BollywoodLife gives the film three stars. This is a good movie that will make you think.

Rating: 3 from 5
