“I can’t think of anything that would stop me”
Everyone is talking about the Jeffrey Dahmer case right now. Netflix has released a drama starring Evan Peters as a serial killer, and has also announced a true-crime docuseries coming next month. After the release of Netflix’s new true crime drama, people are finding old clips and interviews with the serial killer. One interview in particular is with Jeffrey Dahmer in prison and he talks in depth about what he did.
Jeffrey Dahmer killed 17 young men and boys between 1978 and 1991, making him one of the most notorious serial killers in history. He often lured his victims back to his apartment, drugged them and killed them. He was a cannibal and ate several body parts of his victims. In an interview, he broke down why he believes he committed the crimes and the ritual behind his murders.

“I’ve become desensitized to it”
In 1993, the man known as the “Milwaukee Cannibal” gave Inside Edition an interview with him in prison and spoke openly about his crimes. The clip on YouTube had nearly 20 million views, and parts were posted on TikTok, also with millions of views. In the interview with journalist Nancy Glass, Dahmer described how he became “desensitized” to his crimes and had “obsessive desires” for his victims. He said he only started having dominance fantasies at the age of 15.
When asked what he wanted from his victims, Dahmer said he wanted to “control” them and “own them permanently.” He said he did not kill people because he was “angry” or “hated them” but because he wanted to “keep them to himself”. “As my obsession grew, I saved body parts,” Jeffrey Dahmer explained. “It’s a process, it doesn’t happen overnight. When you depersonalize another person and just see them as an object, it seems easier for you to do things you shouldn’t do.
The interview describes Dahmer as “articulate and intelligent,” which makes him all the more terrifying for being able to get away with his crimes for so long. “I always knew it was wrong,” he said. “But the first murder was not planned. I had fantasies of picking up the hitchhiker and being in complete control and dominance.’
He went on to describe how “no one had a clue what was going on for over a decade” and explained why there was a nine-year gap between his first murder and the others. His first killing occurred in 1978 and the next was in 1987. “There was just no way to fully express what I wanted to do,” he said. “When I moved to Milwaukee in ’81, I started reading pornography. Eventually, this led to frequenting gay bars.
Jeffrey Dahmer visited the Club 219 bar, picking up the victims before taking them back to his apartment. He offered the men money to come back to him and photograph them.
He continued: “I took this guy back to a hotel once, I just planned to drug him and spend the night with him, I didn’t intend to hurt him. When I woke up in the morning, I had apparently beaten him to death with my fists. I have no memory of it, but that’s what started all the fuss.

“If I couldn’t keep them whole, I could at least keep their skeletons”
Later in the interview, Jeffrey Dahmer told journalist Nancy Glass that he was not repulsed or upset after each of his crimes and said instead that it was “almost addictive” and “a rush of energy.” He said he photographed the victims to memorize their appearance and “physical beauty.” “If I couldn’t keep them with me whole, at least I could keep their skeletons,” he said, describing his initial plans to set up an altar with the skulls of his victims “as a memorial.” He described it as “so weird and weird” but “a place where I can collect my thoughts and feed my obsession”.
He admits there were times he looked back and thought “what have I done” and thought his crimes were grotesque, but still said it was all “obsession”. He described his “ritual” for committing murder, including having his mixture of sleeping pills “already made” and always watching The Exorcist 3 with his victims as it “puts him in the mood to kill”.
He later described cannibalism and eating the hearts of his victims as “branching out” and “a way to make me feel like they were a part of me.” He said he once took the head of one of his victims to work with him.
“I wish I could say I just quit completely”
When asked if he still felt the urge to kill people at the time, Dahmer said he wished he “could say it just went away completely, but no, there are times when I still have the old compulsions.” He said that if he had not been caught and was still a free man, he would still have committed more murders. “I can’t think of anything that would stop me,” he said.
