In an interview with David Axelrod on CNN’s “The Ax Files” podcast, Legend described his own experience with wife, model and TV personality Chrissy Teigen’s miscarriage in 2020.

“Anyone who has dealt with pregnancy knows that none of this is accidental, none of this is frivolous. And it’s so intimate, and it’s so personal,” he said. “Why do we want our government involved in these decisions?”

The legend mentions strict abortion restrictions in certain states that have resulted in restrictions on patients’ ability to access standard miscarriage care. A woman in Texas, for example, was forced to carry the remains of the fetus inside her for two and a half weeks after a miscarriage last year due to strict anti-abortion laws.

“Anyone who has had a miscarriage, after all that trauma, all that pain, all those tears that we’ve been through, to then have the local prosecutor’s office or local law enforcement investigate and make sure that the miscarriage is state-sanctioned … to bring the government into this conversation in any way is so offensive to me,” he said.

Teigen and Legend announced that they had lost their child after pregnancy complications in 2020. Teigen was about halfway through her pregnancy with the couple’s third child, who they had started calling Jack. Teigen has spoken out about the struggles of her miscarriage and penned an emotional essay about the traumatic loss.

The pair are parents to Luna and Miles, conceived through IVF, and announced Wednesday that they are expecting another child.

Government involvement in reproductive rights is “nasty, it’s evil. It shouldn’t even be a discussion. The government shouldn’t be involved,” Legenda said.

In her interview with Axelrod, Legend highlighted the devastating experiences of late-term abortion patients. “Anyone who makes this agonizing decision at this point in pregnancy is only doing so because they have a good reason to do so, whether it’s the health of the mother or the health of the child,” he said.

The star hopes she can use her platform to advocate for change. “Over time, I figured out how to use my celebrity and how to use the power that I have and the reach that I have and the resources that I have to make real change.”
