Blazes have caused millions of pounds worth of damage and the countryside is a tinderbox, yet one of fashion’s most celebrated designers thought it would be the perfect time to light a bonfire at her wild birthday party.
I can reveal hard-pressed firefighters, who’d normally be saving people’s lives, were called to the 47th birthday bash of royal favourite Alice Temperley, whose ‘boho chic’ dresses are worn by A-listers from the Duchess of Cambridge to film star Keira Knightley.
‘She should be charged for wasting the time and money of the emergency services,’ says a local who lives near Temperley’s West Country estate.
It’s understood her property’s fire alarm was set off by the bonfire she decided to light as part of the festivities, which were attended by fashion figures including model Jade Parfitt, 44.

Parfitt was later pictured, dressed in one of the designer’s leopard print gowns, holding one of the hoses that the firemen used to put out the fire. ‘Health and safety gone mad,’ the model joked. ‘Alice Temperley knows how to throw a party and make the best dresses for putting out bonfires. The firemen are going to be hiring me because I have it all under control.’
A spokesman for Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue service confirms: ‘We were called to a fire alarm sounding at a property near Ilminster, at 12.50am on Sunday July 24 and one fire crew attended.’
Temperley declines to comment.
But it would appear she has few regrets, judging by the picture she shared of her flicking her finger at the camera while posing with pals.
Pasta la vista! Gino snubs tea with Queen
Off with his head! Italian-born TV chef Gino D’Acampo claims he turned down an invitation to tea from the Queen because he didn’t like the food and drink on offer.
‘I’m not very keen on tea or cucumber sandwiches,’ says D’Acampo, 46, who presents programmes including Let’s Do Lunch, Gino’s Italian Escape and gameshow Family Fortunes.
‘I was invited to the Palace for tea just before Covid, but a cucumber sandwich is my worst nightmare. I don’t like tea either, so I phoned my agent and said: “I’d love to meet her, but I don’t like tea and cucumber sandwiches, and I can’t do either of those things. I’m also going to have to wear a tie, and the last time I did that was when I got married. I can’t do that. But if I can have a plate of pasta and a cup of coffee, I’m in.”’
Is this same tea-and-cucumber-hating Gino who recently introduced afternoon teas at his eponymous restaurant in Newcastle upon Tyne?
Oscar-winning British composer Anne Dudley is modest when it comes to showing off her honours. The creator of TV’s Poldark soundtrack, Dudley, who won the Academy Award for best original musical score for The Full Monty in 1998, says of her Oscar statuette: ‘It’s in a glass cupboard with my husband’s daffodil trophy from the local show and my daughter’s school sports cup. We’re very egalitarian in my house.’
Oops Jezza, and on that bombshell…
Jeremy Clarkson’s girlfriend, Lisa Hogan, demonstrated remarkable elegance as she hurled herself backwards off a yacht during their holiday in France, but it’s the motormouth star who I think dived into trouble.

Voicing his appreciation of her skills, The Grand Tour host, 62, said: ‘Just amazing. I mean, she was born in the 1960s.’
Until now, the former actress and model’s age has generally been said to be late 40s — so she’d have been born in the 1970s.
Having checked official details provided to Companies House, I can confirm Hogan was born in May 1969. So Clarkson has ungallantly told the world her real age is 53.
What a cad. Don’t push him off the boat, Lisa!
Kirsty in party mood at daughter’s hen do

A stern figure when grilling dissembling politicians, Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark does let her hair down occasionally, as this picture proves.
The 67-year-old Scot is knocking back thecocktails with her journalist daughter, Caitlin Clements, 32, who’s due to marry civil servant, Callum Galloway, 31.
‘My gal’s hen party, in our home,’ says Wark, who is married to TV producer Alan Clements.

Prince Charles has reached the peak of patronages. I hear he’s become patron of the Braemar Mountain Rescue Team that covers his favourite hill — taking over the role from his late father. Such is Charles’s affection for Lochnagar that he immortalised it in his illustrated 1980 children’s book, The Old Man Of Lochnagar. It was originally written by the Prince to entertain his brothers, Andrew and Edward, as children. The book was later made into an animated short film by the BBC, with Robbie Coltrane providing the voice of the hermit and Charles narrating.
