Beyonce is undoubtedly one of the most successful singers today. Of course, that doesn’t mean everyone is a fan. In fact, many people are taking every possible opportunity to call out Beyoncé for real or perceived insults.

Critics have several complaints about Beyoncé, including comments about the quality of her music, the way she has spoken out about social issues in recent years, and how she presented herself as a mother (remember the backlash she got for her twin pregnancy photos?).

But now there is one specific thing people are saying about Beyoncé and how she appears in public, specifically in interviews.

Why is Beyoncé avoiding live interviews?

Most people who follow Beyoncé’s music have probably noticed that she avoids live interviews these days. When she was a rising artist with Destiny’s Child, things were different. In that era, Beyoncé often appeared on talk shows and was interviewed by all kinds of reporters and TV hosts.

But these days, she’s largely sending out personal essays rather than sitting down and answering a list of questions or just having a little casual conversation.

It turns out that while people appreciate Bey’s music (or not), they don’t think too highly of her when she’s just talking — but neither does the singer herself.

Beyoncé hates the sound of her own voice

One potential reason Bey avoids personal interviews? She admits she hates the sound of her own speaking voice. Us magazine reported that Bey says she can’t stand the sound of her speaking voice when she hears it played.

The thing is, most regular people hate hearing themselves too, but most of the Beyhive would assume their queen doesn’t mind hearing herself. After all, what’s the difference between singing in a studio and recording a voicemail?

But it’s not her speaking voice per se that bothers people who’ve watched Bey’s old interviews or listened to her interact with interviewers on the red carpet or with anyone else in a more formal setting.

Critics say Beyoncé sounds “uneducated” in interviews

Apparently, Beyoncé’s complaints about her voice don’t extend to the actual content of her interviews. From the viewers’ point of view, however, there lies the main problem.

Countless online commentators have emphatically stated that Beyoncé sounds absolutely illiterate in interviews and believe that this is why she has decided to stop doing live interviews.

Facing society’s ridicule for sounding “like a fifth grader” really sounds like something most people would want to avoid. And Bey has had her taste of criticism about her public speaking skills in the past, in the form of a big diss from Wendy Williams.

Wendy is known for dragging many celebrities through the mud for various reasons (and often reasons her viewers don’t agree with), and she didn’t give Beyoncé a pass.

In 2020, Wendy was booed by the audience on her talk show when she said she was a fan of the singer but planned to watch Bey’s upcoming documentary with “closed captions so I’ll be able to understand what she’s saying.”

Williams dug the dagger further by specifying; “You know Beyoncé can’t talk. Sounds like he has a fifth grade education.” (someone else imagining a dead emoticons here?)

Unfortunately, Wendy wasn’t the only person who felt this way. Tons of commenters on social media have responded to Bey’s penchant for submitting personal essays by criticizing her ability to speak and some of the apparently awkward things she’s said in live interviews.

Do people really think Beyoncé is “dumb”?

in 2015 Lady Black questioned why people think Bey is “dumb”. The author described a social media post in which Bey spoke out against police brutality that was littered with comments from “fans” mocking Bey for allegedly having someone else write the caption because “there’s no way” she could have done it herself .

Lady Black acknowledged that Bey does seem somewhat out of touch with social issues, pointing out that in one performance of Drunk In Love, Jay-Z raps about admiring Ike Turner (who is well known for abusing his late wife) .

So not only do people assume Beyoncé is uneducated, but she doesn’t help herself by appearing to be tone deaf when it comes to certain issues.

Of course there are fans who defend Beyoncé by suggesting that she gets a little confused in interviews because she tries so hard to be private about her life but also not say the wrong thing.

It really seems odd that a super celebrity of Bey’s caliber would be nervous in an interview setting, but since she’s been the subject of so much criticism throughout her career (including trolls trolling her for gaining weight in her late teens ), perhaps there is some logic behind this possible motivator.

Then again, no one knows for sure what Beyoncé’s true motivations are when it comes to her interviews (or lack thereof), and it’s hard to argue that she isn’t some kind of a genius, though perhaps not a public speaking one given her background in the music industry.
