Carlisle-born midfielder Owen Moxon has returned to the club where it all started at the start of the summer and his range of passing has already come to good effect as he continues to make the transition from part-time to full-time football.

MANAGER: Selection problems are what you want

July 22, 2022

The 24-year-old impressed with Annan Athletic last outing and was one of the first signings made by manager Paul Simpson after the end of last season.

Another hour in the heat against Livingston at the Largs training camp on Tuesday afternoon added more game minutes and we caught up with him to find out how things were going as he caught his breath shortly after the final whistle.

“We all work hard every day and playing a game always feels a little bit easier than just running around and things like that,” he said. “Everybody is giving 100 percent and that’s what matters.

“Obviously it wasn’t the best result but I thought we were good in parts. I think you could say there were some tired legs in the second half and that’s because we’ve been working really hard so far.

“Once the league games come, it will all be worth it.”

The warm-up set the tone for another high-energy game, with assistant manager Gav Skelton ensuring drills were precise and sharp.

“It has to be because we want to make sure we’re the best we can be,” he commented. “The weather is a joke at the moment but everyone came out and did it right and I think we used the ball well.

“We created a lot of chances and we know we have to use them. We’ve been doing that in the pre-season, so maybe it was a bit of an off day in that game.

“The good thing is that if we create those chances, it will help us for the first game. I personally wanted to come here and play as many games as possible and I can’t wait for the league games to start now.

“Then it really matters. You can do as much as you want in the pre-season, but the league is what counts. I get a buzz every time I think about it.”

MANAGER: The test we wanted

And after taking that step back into the professional ranks, he said: “I haven’t been full-time for about five years, I think, and I’ve just spoken to Jamie Roper about it.

“It’s already starting to affect my legs, but you just have to deal with it. I know the sessions will be around next week’s League One game but the gaffer wants us to be pushed to the limit.

“Like I said, I feel it in my legs but it’s about dealing with it and knowing it will be good for the next league games.

“When we get to periods like Christmas and the end of the season we’ll be fit and with the way it’s going I think we’ll be one of the strongest in the league.”

“The good thing for me is that the boys were brilliant,” he added. “It’s a step up, but I feel like I fit in well and it was comfortable too.

“I know there are things I need to work on and improve, which the gaffer and Gav talk to me about all the time. I’m just looking forward to seeing how it all works out for me in the league.

“Being local, I know a few of the lads who are friends of mine were at the game that day, but I don’t think much of it. It’s good when you leave the field to read the comments of the fans.

“Even if it’s just pre-season, reading the comments from the supporters is good and gives you a little bit more confidence. It’s the same for all guys, when the fans are behind you, it matters.

“As a fan myself, I know how much everyone supports Carlisle and I know what it means to them to do well. When they’re there in numbers, even for a friendly like last weekend, it’s brilliant.

“We’re hoping as many people as possible can come to the first game, get behind us and give us that extra boost.”

And pulling on that shirt to walk down the tunnel and onto the pitch for the Bolton game last weekend proved as special a moment as he expected it to be.

“I’m not going to lie, it’s the first time I’ve been nervous before a game in a long time,” he admitted. “Being at Brunton Park and finally getting on the pitch – that’s all I’ve wanted to do from a very young age.

“Then on Twitter, as we said before, some of the fans said I had a good game and that’s nice. I felt good about myself, but I also felt like I could do better, and as I gain more confidence, hopefully that will grow.

“I was made to feel very welcome by the group so to come to Largs and have a bit of a laugh on top of the serious training is another good thing for us all.

“And the format we play has worked. We’ve played with both sitting and one up front, but the gaffer has also changed it a few times.

“I’m used to being the one sitting, so I was able to get a little further. It’s a role I’ve never played before so it was different for me to do that against Bolton.

MANAGER: They’re going in there

“I had to adapt to it, then things change during the game and then we have to talk to each other and solve things while we are out there. This works well.

“The assists are good,” he continued. “I support myself with things like that and I can remember the first interview I did where I talked about the fact that I would take risks.

“Sometimes they don’t come out, but when they do, it hurts teams. This is what I love to do and know Denno [Kris Dennis] there are at the end of several, and this is from the same exact ball in several games now.

“We keep laughing about it, but I’m looking for him and we seem to have a good understanding. Gibbo makes his forward runs and I like to play passes into him, I never like to be too sure.

“I just want to help everybody and the team and get as many assists as possible.”

Wearing the number 4 shirt may add weight to the sense of personal responsibility, but it also acts as an incentive to be, as the manager continues to say, the best you can be every time you represent the club.

“Like I said, Bolton was the first time I’ve been nervous in a long time,” he told us. “Once I got out there, I was fine.

“Once you get going it’s just another game of football and the fans have been brilliant which has helped. I’m sure there will be a lot more to the League One game so I’m looking forward to it.

“Hopefully it will be my good debut for the club so I’m looking forward to it.

“And I know there’s no guarantee of that. There are a lot of good players and the competition is strong, so I have to keep working hard and hopefully I will be the one chosen to play.”
