There was plenty of footage from Joan’s harder-to-find projects, her TV movies like The Stripper, that many had never heard of. How many of these did you manage to watch and how did you find them?

Almost all. The archivist’s job will be to go find my films. Like, she won an Emmy for this movie I’ve never even heard of. How can I see it? They would send me a link and I just tried to go through them all like that. Some of them were really hard to find. “Stripper” is particularly difficult. What was disappointing for us is that many of them are lost or you can’t find a good quality version like the image for “The Stripper”. While many of Paul’s films have really stood the test of time. These are famous movies. So you can get a good Blu-ray of The Hustler, but you can’t get a good Blu-ray of Joan’s 80s TV movies. These are the realities of an actor’s life. Sometimes we work on these things and they are really successful and age really well. Other times you put your heart and soul and the same fire and passion into something that doesn’t age well, that people don’t care about. But that doesn’t mean you didn’t do a good job or give it your all.

I was hoping for a shot from “A Big Hand For A Little Lady” because that was the first Joan movie I saw. It was my mom’s favorite when she was a kid.

This is a really sexist movie.

That’s right, yes.

One of the things that’s weird about the editing room floor is that there was a lot of footage from this movie for a while, and I never cut it out on purpose. It’s just that those parts of the narrative didn’t work.

In an interview, someone asked Joan what parts she connected with the most and she said they were all parts of her, that it was the joy and the trauma of being an actor. I was wondering if you felt that was similar for yourself as an actor?

Absolutely. I was so happy to see her say that. My feeling is that you should make them private. you see This is my job. My job is to try to put something real in front of the camera for you to watch, otherwise it’s a waste of time. So I love that she said that.

In those TV clips you and the archivist found of Joan, she was so candid.

She is so present. She never looks like she’s doing anything stupid. She doesn’t sell. I mean, there’s even that amazing moment where the guy tells her you’re so good for your age, and you just see her just giving him ice. You know, she has no comment on that. She is very southern. So she never wants to be rude. For example, when she is asked the question of “why would I go for a hamburger steak at home” and you just see her say, “I’m a vegetarian.”
