Taylor Hicks has always seemed like a natural for “The Masked Singer,” a FOX reality show that features celebrities performing in elaborate costumes.
Hicks — an Alabama native, country-soul singer and “American Idol” winner — hasn’t competed on that TV series yet. But he made his “Masked Singer” debut on Friday, courtesy of the national tour. Hicks, 45, was unmasked during a tour stop at the Orpheum Theatre Memphis, after performing as the character of Boom Boom Box.
Various celebrity guests have been popping up at tour stops, taking on this particular character. Clues to each celebrity’s identity are provided in advance on social media accounts for the tour.
The “Masked Singer” tour touted Hicks’ guest appearance on Saturday via Instagram, saying his performance “brought the house down in Memphis.”
Hicks also alluded to his guest spot on Twitter, posting a photo and a message that said, “Gettin it in #Memphis. @Masked SingerFOX.”
There’s no word yet on the song Hicks performed in Memphis, but his clue package on the “Masked Singer” tour’s social media made a reference to his “Idol” past. It said:
“I can’t tell you how excited I am to see you all tonight. Being on stage, I feel the most at home, and getting to sing for you all is my happy place. There’s nothing better. And while I know a thing or two about winning, tonight is just really about having an incredible time!
“Today, Boom Boom Box has become my idol. I feel like the stars are aligned this evening and together we are going to make magic onstage! And ohhh there’s going to be surprises, so if I were you I wouldn’t even miss 5 seconds … because here on the Masked Singer Tour, you never know what to expect!
“If you see me later make sure to say hello, but if we don’t get a chance to meet, catch me out of the road. I’m always up for a good time!
“Alright, I better warm up. See you all soon!”
Other celebs appearing as Boom Boom Box on the tour have included radio hosts, TV news anchors, athletes, pageant winners and reality stars.
Another “American Idol” winner, Maddie Poppe, was unmasked in May after performing as Boom Boom Box during a tour stop in Omaha, Nebraska. Singer Drew Lachey of 98 Degrees took on the character in May, as well, and was unmasked in St. Louis.
The “Masked Singer” tour runs through July and is hosted by Natasha Bedingfield, a British singer-songwriter who competed on the FOX series as The Pepper character in Season 6. Other characters on the tour include Queen of Hearts, Taco, Alien, Robot, Baby, Monster and Thingamabob. (FAQs on the tour website offer details on how the tour works, in comparison to the TV show.)
On the TV series, costumed celebrities sing for a panel of judges who evaluate their performances and try to guess their identities. Celebrities are eliminated and unmasked each week until a winner is revealed. Winners on the show have included T-Pain, LeAnn Rimes, Wayne Brady, Jewel, Nick Lachey and Teyana Taylor.
