Professor Raymond Akongburo Atuguba, the Dean of the University of Ghana Law Faculty reiterated that collaboration with other African scholars is the solution to the current publishing challenges facing African scholars.
The Dean stated this during an open forum and round table held as part of the activities to mark the African Science Renaissance Day (DSRA) organized by the College of Humanities, University of Ghana.
Speaking on the topic “Law and Multidisciplinary Research in Aid of Science and Technology”, Prof. Atuguba said there are various reasons for the stagnant publications of African scholars.
“First, we have no place to write, invent, create and innovate. African scholars have a huge teaching burden and few hands to support the learning process; there are not enough mentors, researchers, libraries, information technology (IT) support and funding,” he said.
Prof. Atuguba also noted that currently, for the publications of African scientists to be recognized, there must be collaboration with foreign researchers.
“Therefore, the chances of visibility for most African scientists only increase when you are invited by Western and Northern researchers to come together.”
To improve the situation, Prof. Atuguba stated that “African scholars can creatively co-opt partners where there is money, time, support and space to help us publish, but we must bargain hard for greater intellectual space and visibility’.
More importantly, he recommended intercontinental cooperation.
“We need to work to collaborate with other African scientists, a step that always makes research excellent and powerful.”
He also encouraged scientists to promote their work electronically and publish it immediately.
“In Africa, Ghana and the University of Ghana, we have a burst of science but we have not fully harnessed, harnessed and incubated it,” Prof. Atuguba.
He advised African scientists to make their science accessible to African countries and students.
