Mother of actors, Shahid Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter, Neliima Azeem had been through a lot in the personal front. She had married three men in her life and had single-handedly raised her children like a proud mother. For the unversed, the actress had married actor, Pankaj Kapur in 1975, and together they had welcomed a baby boy and named him Shahid Kapoor. However, Pankaj had left them when Shahid was only three and a half years old. A few years later, Neliima had found love again in the arms of her second husband, Rajesh Khatter, in 1990, and together they had a child, Ishaan Khatter. But, it seems like Neliima was quite unlucky in love as her second marriage also did not work, and she had married for the third time to a renowned musician, Raza Ali Khan.

As we all know, the world has not been fair to single mothers as they have to face many difficulties while raising their children. Now, in a recent interview, Neliima opened up about the struggles that she had to go through while providing a happy life to her children, Shahid Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter. Both of her boys have successfully carved a niche for themselves in the world of glamour. Shahid Kapoor is a self-made star, and his stepbrother, Ishaan has also decided to walk in his brother’s footsteps with his debut movie, Dhadak. Neliima also shares a warm bond with her bahu, Mira Rajput Kapoor, and she has lauded her with praises for putting her family together again.

In an interview with the ETimes, Neliima Azeem recalled the tough time, when she was left alone with her three and a half-year-old child, Shahid Kapoor. Separation from her life partner, Pankaj Kapur, was not her decision, but she had to because the latter had moved on in his life. And after the birth of Ishaan Khatter, Shahid had taken care of him as his own child. Elaborating her pain of failed marriage with Pankaj, Neliima said:

“It was the first time when I actually experienced grief, sorrow, rejection, anxiety, pain and fear of the unknown and a whole lot of insecurity.”

Being a single mother is twice the work, tears and stress, but at the same time, one gets a double amount of love, hugs and pride. Sharing a similar experience, Neliima mentioned that she had struggled for years to provide her sons with a happy life. Now, she feels proud to see Shahid and Ishaan flourish in their acting career. Neliima shared that now it’s her time to relax and enjoy with her grandchildren, Zain and Misha. In her words:

“I raised my kids as a single mother, and it was very tough in those days. Now, after working very hard and struggling for so many years, it is a happy time to watch my sons do exceptionally good work in films and spend time with my grandchildren. Both Zain and Misha are great fun to be with and it is a delight watching them grow.”
