The Qatar fashion industry has been growing exponentially, said Director of M7, Maha Ghanim Al Sulaiti.
With the country recently hosting the world’s largest runway event “Qatar Fashion United by CR Runway” at the 974 stadium, Al Sulaiti said that the country’s fashion market is on “100 percent” rapid growth.
Al Sulaiti also expressed hope that the fashion show “will put Qatar’s talent on the map amongst regional and international players in the industry. M7 is proud to be the vehicle that champions creative talents in Qatar.”
The director also noted how M7 nurtured Qatari designers, giving them an avenue for their talent and business to nurture.
M7 is Qatar’s epicentre for innovation and entrepreneurship in design, fashion and tech. “We want to have a platform or an ecosystem that supports them (designers), so we bring together a lot of partners that support designers in their journey.”
“The idea is to become successful entrepreneurs and to be able to be sustainable in their fashion and we’ve seen a lot of growth lately in the last couple of years, we’ve seen a lot of designers come out and even with the fashion show, this is really a celebration of that,” said Al Sulaiti to The Peninsula on Friday.
During the runway show out of 150 designers, 21 were Qatar-based brands that showcased their products in front of over 20,000 people who attended the event.
The Qatari brands include Aliya Al Obaidly, Harlienz, Hamadis, Drizzle, Trzi, Lorenaa Michelle, Mhefhef, Muna Saad, Aldukan, Wit Noiz, Naila Al Thani, Maryam Al Darwish, Tamader Alsultan, Ghada Albuainain, Hairaat, Khaltham’s Pavilion, Yasmin Mansour, Wadha, Waad, TIIYA, and 1309.
The M7 Director meanwhile stressed that “fashion plays an important role in culture and sports,” as the event was held in between the semifinal and final matches of the World Cup.
“We see a lot of sports players or athletes really engaged in fashion as well, it’s kind of a self-expression, your clothes express your culture, who you are and how you want to identify yourself, and there’s a clear connection to the sports world – there’s a lot of advancements in terms of fashionable wear in sports, not just wearing it for performance,” she said.
According to Statista, an online platform specialised in the market and consumer data, revenue from the fashion segment in the country is expected to show an annual growth rate of 14.21 percent, resulting in a projected market volume of $1.98bn by 2027.
Statista forecasted that the industry would reach $1.02bn this year alone.
Aside from M7, Liwan Design Studio and Labs has been launched this year which is a space dedicated to supporting and connecting design professionals who are integral to Qatar’s burgeoning creative community.
Both organisations are part of Qatar Museums ‘Creative Hubs’ and are located at Msheireb Downtown Doha.
