Above all, she is proud to be a Goan in Vancouver.

BACKGROUND
Hailing from Sarzora, Ashney Rebello completed secondary education at Assumpta Convent High School in Sarzora and higher secondary education at Chowgule College, before proceeding to pursue her degree in fashion at the prestigious National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).
She later married Xavier Rebello, a shipping company executive from Varca, and they shifted to Hong Kong. Later, they along with their daughter Winona, moved base to Vancouver in Canada.
BUSINESS
While in Canada, Ashney turned her attention to her culinary skills and became a certified chocolatier from Barry Callabuet and Luis Amado. Taking note of her creative ideas and her skills, she was advised to get into the corporate gifting business.
“Vancouver is the base for a number of large companies and they regularly have corporate events. I set up the ‘Ashney’s Artisan Company’ to prepare corporate gifts for various such events,” said Ashney.
“I make all cookies, sweets and savouries at home and also support local businesses for cocktails, kits, cheese and wine. I then customise all these boxes and jars before it is presented as souvenirs at corporate events. I do charcuterie boards (a board which includes cured meats, cheeses, crackers, nuts, fruits and vegetables, and dipping sauces) as well and they are a super hit.”
Such has been the demand that Ashney has received orders for up to 2,000 corporate gift boxes at a recent event.
“We customise all gift boxes at home. My daughter, Winona and I, prepare these gift boxes with some part-time help.”
Ashney is happy to add a Goan touch to her corporate gifts.
“I love doing my cocktail corporate gifts with Cazulo Feni. For me, Goa is my pride and I love to show who I am. In fact, I always tell people I am a Goan not the butter chicken of India.”
GOENKARPONN
Ashney is proud to showcase her Goan identity in Vancouver.
“When Goans in Vancouver got together for the first time to celebrate the Feast of St Francis Xavier with a Konkani Mass at St Nicholas Parish in Langley, BC on December 3, I prepared homemade Kadio Bodio to add to the traditional fervour,” said Ashney.
“I also make Perad, Doce, Patoleos, Bebinca, Dodol, Batica and other Goan delicacies. I love cooking Goan dishes and am even considered as the Sorpotel Queen of Vancouver,” she adds.
“Above all, I try to present my food in a modern way to the world at my upcoming shows and in magazines. I got an award twice for taking home cooking to a different level.”
Ashney is proud of her Goan identity and besides cuisine, she has also promoted Goan fabric by draping herself in a Kunbi saree on the cover page of her soon-to-be-released book ‘Ashney’s Kitchen Stories: The Ultimate Cookbook of Goan Recipes’.
Besides her upcoming cookbook, Ashney has been a regular contributor for Tricity News, writing about her food and her stories.
Ashney was recently featured in the 40/40 project by Jen Container on ‘Empowering Women: 40 stories of 40 women’ in Vancouver. She is now in the process of doing a movie and some shows on Netflix.
OUTREACH
Ashney is proud of her Goan roots and makes it a point to support outreach programmes for the least, last and lost sections of society in Vancouver.
“Along with my daughter, I am involved in a lot of programmes like feeding the hungry, preparing care packages, getting laptops refurbished by Youth Leadership of British Columbia (YLSBC) and presented to the lesser fortunate. Recently, I helped with a food collection drive along with the Bishop David Motiuk of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of New Westminster and the sisters.”
“I also take part in all Goan events and I try to sponsor them. I also give a lot of food donations through the Goa Overseas Association (GOA) Vancouver to the needy people every month,” says Ashney.
