Kirstie Alley passed away at the age of 71 after being diagnosed with cancer. People reported that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer, which was then confirmed by Alley’s representative. Her family made the announcement of her passing and it was later revealed that she was getting treatment for her cancer at a hospital in Florida, where she lived.
Unfortunately for Alley, the cancer was caught too late, and she passed not long after being diagnosed. Colon cancer is reportedly one of the more curable types of cancer, due to the existence of screenings from colonoscopies. Sadly for Alley, the cancer wasn’t caught soon enough to successfully treat it. Several celebrities have shared their thoughts on Alley’s passing including some of her former co-stars. John Travolta took to his Instagram feed to share that “Kirstie was one of the most special relationships I’ve ever had. I love you Kirstie. I know we will see each other again.” Travolta starred with Kirstie Alley in Look Who’s Talking. Both Scientologists, the two had been friends for a long time.

Jamie Lee Curtis worked with Alley on Fox’s Scream Queens series, and she took to her Instagram page to pen a tribute to the late star. “She was a great comic foil on Scream Queens and a beautiful mama bear in her very real life. She helped me buy onesies for my family that year for Christmas. We agreed to disagree about some things but had a mutual respect and connection. Sad news.”

Eat some tuna.’ We were rehearsing It Takes Two, and every day she amazed me with her generosity of the tangible and with her soulfulness. The world is a bit empty without Kirstie.”

Ted Danson, who worked with Alley on Cheers, told Yahoo! in a statement that he found out Alley had died after he got off a plane where he had just rewatched an episode of Cheers, which he claims he never does. “I am so sad and so grateful for all the times she made me laugh. I send my love to her children. As they well know, their mother had a heart of gold. I will miss her.”

Alley’s Veronica’s Closet co-star, Kathy Najimy, took to her Instagram feed to say that her heart was heavy. “I love Kirstie Alley,” she said. “We first met in a van on the way to shoot an all-woman film in the desert. She was one of the most beautiful beings I had ever seen. And hilarious. And the desert was hot and dirty. And I was pregnant. And she had no filters and made me laugh. And that began our relationship. Acting with her was some kind of free-flowing dream. Nothing was off limits. She was a brilliant actor.”

She had massive Halloween and Easter parties and invited the entire crew of the show and their families. She wanted everyone to feel included. She loved her children deeply. I’ve never met anyone remotely like her. I feel so thankful to have known her. I’m going to miss her very, very much.”

Maksim was Alley’s professional dance partner on Dancing With the Stars many years ago and the two later ended up having a very public feud over Scientology, but Maksim still loved her. “We haven’t spoken lately and I’ll tell you everything when I finally see you, but for now I want to say that I love you very much and I wish you the most peaceful rest,” Chmerkovskiy posted on his Instagram page. “I thought you’d be around forever,” he continued. “I wish we spoke often. Thank you for everything. I love you Kirstie Alley.”
