SPOILER ALERT: The following article contains major spoilers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, proceed at your own risk!
in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Okoye takes one emotional gut punch after another. The film opens with the death of King T’Challa – the man she swore to protect and guard at all costs – and while on duty to protect Princess Shuri on an overseas mission afterwards, she is devastated again when the young royal is kidnapped . And as if the circumstances weren’t bad enough, she becomes the target of Queen Ramonda’s wrath and is stripped of her role as commander of the Dora Milache.
It’s all heavy material for the character’s arc in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is the product of a close partnership between Danai Gurira and writer/director Ryan Coogler.

Although it is unclear what her exact status with the Dora Milaje is at the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forevershe’s especially suited for a superpowered role in the third act of the blockbuster – wearing the armor of the Midnight Angel from the comics.
And it wasn’t all just broad strokes. Danai Gurira noted that she worked closely with Ryan Coogler on every line of dialogue creation Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – taking full control of her franchise role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She added,
