A new book aims to understand the lived experiences of people with disabilities and those who care for them through conversations, short fiction and personal essays, publisher Westland Books announced on the eve of International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

“This Kind of Child – The ‘Disability’ Story” by poet and translator K. Srilata will be released on December 19. as well as imaginary truth,” Srilata said.

What began as her daughter’s story soon became the story of everything surrounding the term “disability.”

“I am the mother of a child who does not fit into the school system, a child with disabilities from it. She was a child who made “mistakes”, “mistakes” that the school system did not forgive. The principal of an alternative school told us that there was no way they could accept “a child like that.” My daughter went from being a child to ‘that kind of child’ in that one moment,” Srilata added.

The book brings together first-person narratives, interviews and short fiction that reveal the experienced worlds of people with disabilities and those who love and care for them. “Disability is a complex subject. The multiple perspectives this book weaves together are empathetic and reflect a clear vision of what could be. This is a book that everyone should read,” said Kartika VK, publisher of Westland Books.
