Jury calls Vivek Agnihotri directorial ‘Kashmir Files’ ‘propaganda, vulgar film’ [Watch]

The 53rd International Film Festival of India closed its curtains on Monday with a controversial statement made by jury chief and Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid, who had no qualms about calling director Vivek Agnihotri’s Kashmiri Files a propaganda and vulgar film. In his speech, Nadav said that all the jury members found “Kashmir Dossier” unsuitable for competition at the prestigious festival. He openly shared their feelings on stage, calling the film propagandistic and vulgar, as the festival is also a stage for critical discussions. “We were all disturbed and shocked by the 15th film: The Kashmir Files. It struck us as propaganda, a vulgar film, not suitable for the artistic competition section of such a prestigious film festival. I feel completely comfortable sharing these feelings openly here with you on stage. Because the spirit of the festival is to also embrace critical discussion, which is essential to art and to life,” Nadav said in his address. In the early days of the festival, Anupam Kher said that The Kashmir Files is not just a film for him, but an emotion that he recreates on screen. He also added that Vivek Agnihotri’s film has made people across the world aware of the tragedy that befell Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley in the 1990s.

The film, which released on 11 March 2022, stars Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumaar and Mithun Chakraborty. It’s just one of the few films that has brought huge box office profit to its creators in the post-pandemic era.
