Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan openly talks about several taboo topics related to feminine hygiene on her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda’s podcast What The Hell Navya along with Shweta Bachchan Nanda. The Bachchan women have focused on women’s health and wellness, including topics such as menopause, period stories and sex education. And now Jaya has recalled her embarrassing experience of changing sanitary napkins behind bushes while shooting for outdoor projects.
In their latest episode titled Biology: Blessed But Biased, Navya had a candid discussion with her mother and grandmother about menstruation and reproduction. When Navya asked them about their experience in the first period, Jaya said that she had a lot of difficulties at work. The veteran actress shared her ordeal of how she struggled to change pads on set. She also spoke about the lack of basic amenities like toilets, during the early years of her acting career.
“It was horrible (having periods during filming). When we were shooting outdoors, we didn’t have (vanity) vans, we had to change behind the bushes… It’s crazy. There weren’t even enough toilets, you had to continue across a field or a mountain top. It was awkward, it was uncomfortable,” Jaya said.
She then apologized for getting “too graphic”, saying that they would use plastic bags to dispose of their sanitary napkins and take them home to get rid of them. She revealed that as a child she used sanitary napkins and tied them with belts or duct tape. Shweta also recalled her experience and said that she would just lie on the bed and eat chocolate alone during her period.
The show aims to create a safe space for women of all ages, with hosts representing three generations and bringing different perspectives. Jaya Bachchan feels that the conversation around women is changing very slowly. “It should have been a headline today,” she said. Navya finds male-run women’s health platforms quite ironic.
