Costuming Diana for the season also required a bit of armchair therapy—looking into what Diana actually wore on certain occasions, and imagining why she chose certain outfits for certain events.
“In the Bashir interview, we replicated what she actually wore,” says Roberts, remarking that the princess clearly went into the interview with a mission. “She’s very straight—quite businesslike, isn’t she, in that black jacket, gold earrings, white top. And I think we chose occasions—relating to divorce scenes—where she goes back slightly to her power suits. We did a bit of a parody on a gray lawyer’s suit with a sensible bag. When she visits the queen for one of her final meetings, she’s wearing a lilac suit. It’s powerful but not threatening to the queen.”
The new season also depicts some of Diana’s charity work—and Roberts, always striving to telegraph the trajectory of the character each scene, chose costumes that reflected the character’s role in those moments.
“People want to see a princess, they want to see a fantasy, don’t they? So she will revert back—I think when we first see her going to a hospice, she’s in bright red so everybody can see her,” explains Roberts. “[She was conscious of when] she was out in public presenting herself as this princess. She’s never going to do that in a baseball cap.”
