Almost at the end of his high-profile interview with The Howard Stern Show, acclaimed musician Bruce Springsteen admitted that while he was “late to the party,” he 100% will be back. Anyone who knows anything about Howard and Bruce’s relationship knows that this is a huge twist. After all, Howard once made it clear to the audience that Bruce has no intention of coming on the show.

Despite sitting down with countless A-list celebrities, musicians and politicians, Howard and his team just couldn’t get Bruce to be a guest. But it wasn’t because the Boss felt too good for the self-proclaimed King of All Media. According to Howard, Bruce may have had some personal issues with him. Things that Howard has taken responsibility for. Because of this, they were able to sit down together for one of the best interviews of both their careers.

This is how Howard Stern won Bruce Springsteen’s forgiveness.

Howard Stern’s long-awaited interview with Bruce Springsteen

On October 17, 2022, Howard Stern officially announced that Bruce Springsteen would be interviewed on his show. Between that time and Bruce’s appearance on Halloween, callers, employees and Howard himself commented on how important this moment was to the long-running radio show.

Closer to the date, Howard even announced that he would physically join Bruce at his studio in New York, a place (much to the chagrin of his fans) that he hasn’t set foot in since the start of the pandemic. There’s no doubt that having Howard and Bruce in the same room instead of via Zoom is one of the reasons this is one of the former shocker’s best interviews in years.

But the interview went so well because Howard was genuinely excited about it.

Although Howard admitted he didn’t like Bruce’s music when he was younger, he’s become a huge fan over the past few decades. This was evident both in his questions to the rocker and his reaction to Bruce playing a live assortment of his hits. Howard even claimed that Bruce’s performance of “Thunder Road” made him cry in the studio… for the first time in his long career.

But another reason this interview was so important to Howard was that Bruce refused to do it for years.

Bruce Springsteen feud with Howard Stern

In 2018, Howard Stern admitted that he had finally met Bruce Springsteen in person. While they connected on a personal level, Howard and his producer Gary Dell’Abate (a huge Boss fan) failed to woo him to come on the show to be interviewed.

Howard said on the air that he feels like Bruce is still mad at him.

“I suspect some of the things I said about him on the air in my earlier years put him off in terms of doing the show,” Howard told his audience.

Sure, Howard has said a lot of controversial things about celebrities over the years, but he’s been able to come to terms with a lot of them. This is due to his personal growth and the change in tone on The Stern Show over the past two decades.

While Howard believed Bruce appreciated his change in attitude, the “Born To Run” singer still didn’t want to be on his show. Howard claimed he had no intention of going after the rock star, although Gary admits he’s constantly working with Bruce’s interview team.

Considering that almost every major living rock star of his generation has appeared on The Stern Show, and the fact that they both have deals with SiriusXM, it was strange that Bruce was still hanging on.

Why Bruce Springsteen Forgave Howard Stern

There is no definitive answer as to why Bruce Springsteen forgave Howard Stern and eventually came on his show to be interviewed. However, one can easily deduce a set of responses from the comments the two have made about each other.

First and foremost, Howard’s toning down of Bruce’s music and celebrity status helped their relationship. As he shared his love for Bruce’s 2018 Broadway show many times on air. After attending the show, Howard said it was “one of the most moving nights of his life.”

There was probably an apology or two shared behind the scenes. Howard even half-heartedly mentioned something about Bruce’s wife at the end of their interview on October 31st.

But during their interview, it was Bruce who shed the most light on why things between him and Howard have improved so dramatically. And it all boils down to Howard’s 2019 Rolling Stone interview.

Bruce told Howard he was “touched” by his interview in 2019. It was during his promotional tour for “Howard Stern Comes Again,” the former shock jock’s book of beloved interviews. The bestseller also describes in detail the reasons for the creative and personal evolution of the often controversial radio presenter. This is what Bruce recounted as he too underwent a metamorphosis.

“It was a really revealing and vulnerable interview,” Bruce Springsteen told Howard on The Stern Show.

It is this vulnerability that seems to be the main reason why Bruce finally decided to come on the show and let bygones be bygones.

“Thank you for forgiving me for all my past sins,” Howard told Bruce at the end of their interview.

“No no no!” Bruce interrupted.

“No, it’s important to say.”
