Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar’s friendship is far from over. They have been the best of friends and have given some of the biggest hits of Bollywood. They too had their share of ups and downs, but always came back stronger together. In an excerpt from his biography, Unsuitable Boy, Karan recalls an incident when Shah Rukh wanted to take a bullet from underworld gangster Abu Salem during the release of Kuch Kuch Hota Hain.
In the chapter, Karan revealed that he received a threatening call from Abu Salem, who apparently did not want his film to be released that Friday. The call was answered by his mother, who heard a man’s voice telling her: “Your son is wearing a red T-shirt, I can see him right now. And we will film it if you release this film on Friday.
His mother was trembling with terror. She ran to the door and began to press the number for the elevator. When Karan went nine stories up, she dragged him into the room and asked him to call the cops. “Tonight, my father, Shahrukh, the cops, Adi, everyone was there. The cops advised us, “We will protect you, but you have to move on. You can’t show your fear. You should have the premiere on Thursday,” reads the excerpt.
The team still premiered, but Karan was put in a small room with two security guards to guard him. The director had written that he had always dreamed of Shami Kapoor getting out of his car to attend the premiere. His mother knew that Karan would not be able to fulfill his dream. She told Shahrukh about it. He then went inside and dragged Karan out and assured his mother that nothing would happen to her son.
“Shah Rukh said, ‘What nonsense! I stand here before you. Let’s see who will shoot you. I’m standing right here. I said, “No, no, no, my mom was…” He said to my mom, “Nothing’s going to happen. I am a Pathan. Nothing can happen to me and nothing will happen to your son. He is like my brother. Nothing will happen.”
And with this incident, Karan and Shahrukh renewed their friendship with new vigor and energy and continued to be an inspiration to the younger generation.
