If you happened to be in the front row at last night’s opening show at the FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week like us, or skimmed through the act on Instagram, chances are Anamika Khanna’s fluid designs are on your mind. Amongst the sea of silks, graphic prints and fresh accessories made from gajras, the one outfit that piqued our interest had to be the inimitable denim lehenga. Given that it debuted right in time for the wedding season, are we inching closer to a denim takeover that’s in store for would-be brides? Here’s our view.

An alternate to street style

As the crème de la crème of India’s fashion circles turned up at the Fountain of Joy in Mumbai’s Dhirubhai Ambani Square, one could easily feel the electricity (and the literal fire) in the air.

Khanna, who is known to play around with bold digital prints, gave the audience exactly what they signed up for—a bevy of outfits that flaunted the designer’s signature style but amped up the street style, boho vibes. Seen on the runway were distressed denims, draped dresses with asymmetrical hemlines and a number of coord sets.

Apart from the 3D belt bag and gajra accessories, models were seen in spray-painted black boots, keeping the grunge factor alive and kicking. Models were also spotted in matching caps, braided hair and metal rings.

The lehenga we need this wedding season

The designer’s version of the lehenga—a patchwork skirt made from pieces of denim— might not have been the show stopping silhouette but it gave true main character energy. Paired with a white shirt and an eye-catching red textured bag, the skirt was unmissable both on the runway as well as on the influencers who attended the show wearing it.

The skirt stood out not just owing to its dense-but-made-to-look-light fabric but also due to the several textures incorporated in it. It added the much-needed dynamism, making it truly a one-of-a-kind piece. We are obsessed!
