Chicago Med brought back for season 8 with a fire rock to resolveand while Will Halstead survived Hell with the help of Chicago Fire first responders, his apartment building was not so lucky. He had to tear down the building he bought with his VasCom money because of the damage from the fire and what it would cost him to rebuild, but does that mean his finances are on the mend? Well, according to actor Nick Gelfuss, fans shouldn’t count on one thing ever happening to his character.
Nick Gelfuss and his colleague Jessie Schramm spoke to the press about Chicago Medeighth season, including weighing whether Hannah and Will can really get a clean slate. After Will lost everything in the apartment fire, I asked the star how the loss will affect his character moving forward. Gehlfuss shared:
Well, one thing you can count on is that Will will always have financial problems. The showrunners even told me so outright. We want to keep Will in a not-so-good financial position, and I think that’s wonderful. But I think we’ll see him put that behind him somehow. More importantly, he will focus on the issues that will be happening in Gaffney. There’s going to be a lot of shortages of medical supplies, demand across the supply chain, and he’s going to be one of the main people affected by that. There are quite a few tricks he gets into with all of this to make up for these shortcomings.
Well, Will’s VasCom windfall would never have lasted him too long if Nick Gelfuss had the promise from the showrunners that his character would always have money problems! It’s been a problem he’s struggled with in previous seasons (especially when the cost of his malpractice insurance skyrocketed), and this time he didn’t hold onto the VasCom money long enough. At least the actor seems to have come to terms with it being a constant problem for Will!
The bigger issue for the hospital will involve resources, not Will’s personal finances. Showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider also previewed how supply shortages would cause problems, with Frolov previewing the Doctor’s “manipulation things” that fans saw a bit of in Episode 2 (available streaming with Peacock subscription) with Crockett’s conflict with the new surgeon. Schneider shared that there will be arguments over “scarce items” and plenty of “dramatic situations,” and it looks like Will will be at the center of some of those situations.
The Doctors managed to avoid any crises due to the shortage in the first two episodes, although there was a close call. Whether this continues to be the case remains to be seen; emergency care is fast-paced and never predictable, and hospital pressures can run high even when diagnostic and life-saving supplies are in short supply. Of course, if someone on Chicago Med can get creative to work around problems, that guy is Will Halstead… for better or worse.
Of course, Will may have some personal upheavals along the way due to Chicago Police saying goodbye to jesse lee soffer, who plays Will Jay Halstead’s brother. Regardless of the circumstances of Jay’s departure, Will may not have his brother around and it may affect him with. The three One Chicago shows don’t intersect as much as they used to, and the Halstead brothers haven’t been sharing much screen time lately, but only time will tell.
The only thing fans can be sure of is that time won’t improve Will’s financial situation in any lasting way, based on what Nick Gelfuss had to say!
