It’s no secret that ABC’s The Celebrity Dating Game faced strong criticism from viewers and critics alike. The show tried rebranding the 1965 version of The Dating Game with a celebrity twist. Every episode featured two 30-minute segments where a celebrity looking for love questioned a hidden panel of 3 potential suitors. The show, unfortunately, fell flat almost immediately, running for only one season before ABC announced there would not be a second season.
One thing expressed in nearly every negative review of the show was how unlikeable the featured celebrities were. How could people root for a love match if they weren’t interested in half of the potential couple? Below we go through the absolute worst stars that were featured on The Celebrity Dating Game
8 Michael Bolton
It’s not a great sign when the audience doesn’t vibe with the host of a television show. Michael Bolton has a lot to offer, his popularity reaches across all age groups and media types, even having some drama with Lisa Rinna in the past. But his presence on the show just didn’t seem to fit. Viewers thought his “intro song” for each of the celebrity guests were awkward and out of character for the singer.
Twitter users were left asking if the Grammy winner was okay, as he seemed almost robotic and out of it in most takes. While it’s great to have a household name host a new show to garner attention, producers missed the mark on this one, big time.
7 Zooey Deschanel
It seems like the hosting duties may have been a cursed job, as the audience and critics also didn’t respond well to co-host Zooey Deschanel. Not only did she and her co-host Bolton have no chemistry, but her awkward dance move to fill in gaps of silence also did not come off as funny or quirky as intended. Viewers were put off by the actresses’ presence on the show.
6 Hannah Brown
Bachelorette star Hannah Brown didn’t have as easy of a time winning over her suitors on this dating show. The star seemed out of it like she was aware the results didn’t really matter.
Not to mention she had already been teasing the identity of her boyfriend on social media at the time of the show airing. Instead of that tactic encouraging viewers to watch and see if she found her new beau on the show, her appearance came off as gimmicky, making the show somehow even less believable.
5 Iggy Azalea
Australian rapper Iggy Azalea’s appearance on The Celebrity Dating Game was a mess. The men who were chosen as potential suitors for the star had no idea who she was, even when Zooey revealed her name to them. A chorus of “who” rang among them, and the star was anything but impressed. In hindsight, it’s pretty hilarious that the guests didn’t know who she was, but Iggy was not pumped about it, and neither were her fans watching.
4 Chris Kattan
Viewers were confused about comedian Chris Kattan’s appearance on the show. At first, he seemed spirited and interested, but as the questions started rolling it began to feel like he was playing around too much. It was pretty clear he was there for the exposure and paycheck rather than a chance at love.
3 Margaret Cho
Margaret Cho was the first and only bisexual contestant on The Celebrity Dating Game, which made audiences appreciative. But the normally hilarious comedian fell flat during her appearance. While the hosts insisted she was nervous during her time, it came off a lot more like disinterest.
2 Taye Diggs
Taye Diggs is usually game show magic. His charm and friendly personality easily resonate with a home audience.
Once again, it seemed like the Celebrity Dating Game set had sucked the magic out of their celebrity guest. His responses and actions seemed contrived, leaving little chance for the audience to be excited about his ‘love match.
1 Nolan Gould
Nolan Gould is TV royalty. He grew up in front of the audience’s eyes during his time on Modern Family. Maybe that’s what attributed to the weird feeling people got when watching the actor on the dating show. Some comments made by viewers were that the woman seemed much older than the actor.
His potential suitors also had no clue who he was when his identity was revealed at the end of the show. This led to a rather awkward ending, but Nolan took the case of unknown identity in stride – unlike other celebs previously mentioned.
