An article featuring an interview with actor Sacha Dhawan revealed in Doctor Who magazine 582 that the fatal event that caused the Thirteenth Doctor to regenerate was likely a personal battle between the Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and the Master (Sacha Dhawan). DWM interviewer and author Paul Kirkley alludes to the scene,
“There’s one key, stunning moment in the episode – no spoilers, but you’ll know it when you see it – that Sacha Dhawan is particularly proud of.”
“When the great Terence Dix first pitched the character of The Master to producer Barry Letts more than half a century ago, he sold it as ‘Moriarty to the Doctor’s Holmes.’ So it’s only fitting that Sasha’s Master and Jody’s Doctor face off in their own “Reichenbach Falls” moment.
“I wanted it to be epic and exciting, and when I watched the episode, I thought, ‘I’m so glad we got to do that,'” Sasha Dhawan told Kirkley. “Because it kind of takes your breath away.”
“So it was always very easy with Jody. I do my thing and she does hers and just works. And that’s because even though the characters have so much animosity between them, Jody and I really adore each other. Which actually makes the scenes much more electrifying and much more touching than I thought they would be. Especially in the Centenary Special. I was watching the episode on my laptop in a dark room the other day and I was just a mumbling mess.
Reichenbach Falls refers to a scene from a Sherlock Holmes adventure The last problemin which Sherlock Holmes’ friend Dr. Watson believes that Holmes and his nemesis Professor James Moriarty fell to their deaths in an epic hand-to-hand battle on a precipice overlooking the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland above the deep chasm containing the falls.
The battle is depicted in Sidney Paget’s 1893 illustration for The Strand Magazine adventure.
Rumor has it that the Thirteenth Doctor’s death will occur by falling off a cliff, and there was filming in a steep-walled quarry during the filming of The power of the doctor.
I won’t say where I found this, but as Mandeep Gill is in his special centenary costume, I suspect this was taken at the Bridgend Quarry shoot on 7th or 8th October. By the way, does anyone know what career they are used for? #water pic.twitter.com/U28sKciBef

The power of the doctor has been confirmed to air sometime in October during the week-long 18 October BBC Charter celebration.
BBC America usually runs a Doctor who marathon leading to a Doctor who special and, according to their schedule, there is no such marathon the week before the BBC’s centenary week, so BBC One and BBC America are likely to air the 90-minute spectacular later in the week, possibly on October 23, to round off the BBC’s week-long celebration.
Doctor Who magazine 582 includes a The power of the doctor preview, including interviews with Sacha Dhawan, Janet Fielding, Sophie Aldred, Patrick O’Kane and Ray Holman. Available on UK newsstands and via digital edition on Thursday 15 September.
