9 new movies and TV shows to watch this week on Netflix, Prime Video and more

It’s time for your weekly OTT update and the next seven days have the perfect blend of movies and TV shows to watch in order to satiate all your bingeing needs. Sanya Malhotra spearheads Kathal, a satirical comedy film dealing with the curious case of stolen jackfruit; Modern Love comes out with a brand new edition based in Chennai; To All the Boys films get a spin-off series titled, XO, Kitty; and the immensely successful Super Mario Bros. Movie preps for a digital premiere.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (May 17)

Based on the titular table-top role-playing game, this heist film involves a mystical adventure featuring a band of misfit heroes as they head out to procure a lost relic. Traversing through the Forgotten Realms setting, the group’s mission spirals into danger and chaos as they get on the wrong side of some evil forces. The film stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis and Hugh Grant in pivotal roles.

High Desert (May 17)

Travel to the tiny desert town of Yucca Valley in California where Peggy (Patricia Arquette) struggles to cope with life after her mother’s death. A middle-aged occasional drug addict, Peggy is in a fix about finding a hustle that can get her out of a messy existence. Eventually, she stretches her wings and becomes a private investigator, despite her publicly dishevelled demeanour.

McGregor Forever (May 17)

A four-part documentary series, McGregor Forever chronicles MMA superstar Conor McGregor’s climb back to the heights of UFC supremacy. It takes you back to 2021 when he had one of the most challenging periods of his career, with three fights in a year that ended with him fracturing his tibia and fibula in the last one. Now, the series provides a profound all-access look at the controversial fighter as he prepares to make a comeback to the Octagon while shedding light on his motivations that stem from his past.

Modern Love Chennai (May 18)

The third Indian spin-off of the titular series after Mumbai and Hyderabad, Modern Love Chennai takes you to the capital of Tamil Nadu for a new collection of cosy and heartfelt stories. These unique tales depict love in platonic, romantic, self, familial and other diverse forms while exploring the soul of the city and its extraordinary inhabitants. Modern Love is based on a weekly column of the same name published by The New York Times.

XO, Kitty (May 18)

A spin-off of the To All the Boys film series, this show centres around Katherine “Kitty” Song Covey, the younger sister of Lara Jean. A self-proclaimed expert on love, Kitty trusts her instincts and moves to Seoul for higher studies and to reunite with her long-distance boyfriend Dae-Heon Kim. Unfortunately, she discovers he is dating another girl and realises that relationships are exceptionally complicated when your own feelings are concerned.

Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune (May 18)

An adaptation of the brand-new military science fiction novel from Carlo Zen, Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune revolves around a young man named Akira Ihotsu, who spends his days mutinying against an overbearing society on a future Earth. The planet is in disarray and controlled by Shoren, the Pan-Star System Trade Federation. Eventually, he is recruited to join the titular planetary orbital infantry force, whose missions average a death rate of 70%. Along with misfits from numerous other nations, Akira aims to use this almost fatal opportunity to change his fate.

Kathal (May 19)

Sanya Malhotra leads this satirical comedy as Mahima, a young policewoman handling a peculiar case loosely based on true events involving a local MLA’s precious jackfruits being stolen from his garden. The police are confused about the nature of the crime, while the media tries to exaggerate the situation. Unwilling to displease the politician, law enforcement kicks the investigation up a notch, catapulting the whole situation into the realm of ridiculousness. The film also stars Gurpal Singh, Vijay Raaz, Rajpal Yadav and others.

Muted (May 19)

Originally titled El Silencio, in this gritty series, a man named Sergio Ciscar is released from prison six years after killing his parents as a juvenile. During his time in captivity, he doesn’t utter a word or collaborate with the system, keeping the nature of the crime a mystery. Now, a young and skilled psychiatrist, Ana Dussel, is tasked with watching Sergio at all times as part of a surveillance program to determine his past and his potential danger to society.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (May 19)

The famous Italian plumber and his friends hop out of Nintendo’s video game world into a computer-animated adventure film that has them face the evil Bowser. The plot sees brothers Mario and Luigi get sucked into mystical worlds while fixing a water pipe in Brooklyn. The latter lands in the Dark Lands, whereas Mario finds himself in the Mushroom Kingdom ruled by Princess Peach. It is revealed that Bowser plans to marry Peach and threatens to destroy her world should she refuse. Furthermore, he takes Luigi hostage as leverage. Riled up by these developments, Mario joins forces with Peach and her allies to bring down Bowser for good. The film’s voice cast includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key and Seth Rogen, among others.
