Fame is fickle, one minute someone could be one of the most popular and influential people in the world, and the next no one is returning their text messages. Every year stars fall, and 2022 saw some big stars lose a lot of their credibility. Some of them will probably have their chance at a comeback, others are going to have a much harder time restoring their once-shining reputations.

There were slaps at the Oscars, bad tech investments, break-ins in the state of Vermont, break-ups of once-happy couples, antisemitism, and horrific crimes that can not be described in detail here. What can be done is a summarization, so here is a quick summary of the celebrities who had a rough time in 2022.

THETHINGS VIDEO OF THE DAY

8/8 Elon Musk

Musk long held onto a reputation as being one of the most business-savvy people in the world and for being a technological innovator. Although he does maintain a large following of fans, Musk fumbled the bag when he purchased Twitter for the over-priced amount of $44 billion. Soon after taking over the site and removing content moderation rules, the use of racist slurs like the N-word skyrocketed on the app. Also, in a matter of weeks, most of Twitter’s staff quit in protest of Musk’s unreasonable schedule and demands. There was also the verification fiasco, the restoration then the suspension of Ye’s account, and so many other blunders that have caused advertisers to pull out and for millions to quit Twitter.

7/8 Aaron Rogers

Rogers was already losing a lot of ground after he took an anti-vaccine stance in 2021 and lied to the NFL about his vaccination status, things only got worse from there. In 2022, Shailene Woodley and Rogers broke up after months of Rogers’ repeated controversies. Things looked especially bad for the couple just before the break-up when Rogers forgot to thank his then-fiancee when he won his MVP award.

6/8 Dave Chappelle

He does remain a very popular and influential comedian, but Chappelle almost broke the internet with transphobic comments he made during his 2022 Netflix special. Debate continues to stir and once vocal fans of Chappelle are beginning to abandon the comedian. The students at his old high school rejected having a building named after him because of his comments, and things only got worse for him when he seemingly tried to normalize Kanye West’s antisemitism in an SNL monologue. West soon after went on to say, “I love Hitler,” in an Alex Jones interview.

5/8 The Duggars

The Duggar reality TV empire on TLC came crashing down in 2022. Their show was canceled, Jim Bob lost his election in December of 2021 (not a great way to step into the new year) and his son Josh Duggar was convicted and sentenced to several years in prison for possessing and distributing child pornography.

4/8 Ezra Miller

The DC star had several run-ins with the law in 2022 and was reported to have allegedly abducted an 18-year-old girl. Miller’s crime spree included drug arrests, disorderly conduct charges, and breaking and entering in the state of Vermont. DC’s PR team will be busy for quite a while.

3/8 Will Smith

“The slap heard around the world,” some are calling it. After Chris Rock made a jock about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss, a very pissed-off Will Smith stormed the Oscar stage, walked straight up to Chris Rock, and slapped him across the face. Smith then sat back down and proceeded to scream, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth!” Smith still won the oscar for King Richard but was forced out of the Academy soon after. The event was a PR disaster for the Smith family.

2/8 Amber Heard

It’s one thing to get into a legal battle with your ex, it’s a whole different bag when that legal battle becomes one of the most-watched TV events since the O.J. Simpson trial. Johnny Depp sued Heard for defamation after she accused him of sexual assault in an Op-Ed written for The Washington Post. Heard had already alleged that Johnny Depp had beaten her, and this article escalated her accusations. After nearly a month, Depp convinced the jury with numerous eyewitnesses and a pile of evidence that Heard was the one who had been abusing him. Heard maintains her innocence, but the court has demanded she pay Depp $8 million.

1/8 Kanye West

West used to be a powerhouse in the worlds of art, music, and fashion. He was married to one of the most famously beautiful women in the world, he was a billionaire, and he was riding very high. In 2022, he lost his billionaire status after making a series of grotesquely anti-Semitic remarks. He also lost his deals with Adidas and several other companies, and his divorce from Kim finally settled that he will pay her $200k a month in child support. West has only since doubled down on his antisemitism. In an interview with Alex Jones, he vocally defended Adolph Hitler.
