5 Bollywood movies that defied boycott campaigns and became hugely successful

[ad_1]

As Laal Singh Chaddha gears up for release on 11th August, the boycott trend against this movie has also gained a lot of momentum. Be it the earlier comments made by its leading lady Kareena Kapoor Khan or some characters of Aamir Khan that he played in some of his other movies like 3 Idiots or PK,

Twitter users are aggressively campaigning against the film. However, despite these boycott trends, Aamir and Bebo can still emerge successful because earlier many films have faced such boycott calls but still became successful at the box office.

Dangal

Aamir Khan’s Dangal is one of the biggest all-time hits in the history of Indian cinema. Surprisingly this movie had to face a boycott trend on social media despite being based on the life of India’s famous women wrestlers-Geeta and Babita Phogat. At that time the mindset of the masses was against Aamir Khan as he had made that infamous intolerant remark around the same time. However, despite the outrage, Dangal became a big hit scripting records.

Gangubai Kathiawadi

It is a fact that Bollywood movies are struggling to make a decent collection at the box office post the Covid pandemic period. Moreover, since the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, the movement against star kids has been quite aggressive. So, when Alia Bhatt’s movie Gangubai Kathiawadi was gearing up for release, social media users ran an aggressive campaign against it. Even then, it emerged as one of the successful Bollywood movies in the first half of 2022.

My Name is Khan

Shah Rukh Khan and controversies are nothing new. But when Karan Johar-directed ‘My Name is Khan’ was about to release, a statement from SRK regarding the non-inclusion of Pakistani players in IPL had irked a large section of Indian groups. The irked mass started a campaign against it, questioned his dedication towards India and even his effigies were burnt in different cities. Surprisingly, ‘My Name is Khan’ was the biggest opening film across the globe for Shah Rukh and was a huge hit.

PK

Another Aamir Khan flick which was a big hit was Rajkumar Hirani-directed PK, which also starred Anushka Sharma in important role along with Sushant Singh Rajput in a pivotal character. There were several allegations against the movie including promoting Love Jihad as well as making fun of Hindu Gods. However, defying all protests, the movie emerged as a huge success.

Padmaavat

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat movie also attracted a lot of controversies as it was based on the real-life story of Rani Padmavati. Not only did the masses call for its boycott, but SLB was even assaulted and given death threats. Reportedly, a group had even placed a bounty on the head of Deepika Padukone, who was the leading lady in the film. However, Padmaavat emerged as one of the biggest hits for both Deepika and Ranveer Singh.
