5 Best Found Footage Movies, Ranked

In a sea of bad and mediocre found-footage movies, it might be hard to find something decent, but we tried our best and found some hidden gems to spice up the competition.

The “found-footage” subgenre has grown in popularity over the years, not least due to the fact that it is relatively cheap to produce.

Of course, with such a large number of them, there are a lot of really mediocre or just bad found-footage movies. We tried to find the best of the best and ranked them in our opinion.

5. Trollhunter (2010)

This Norwegian film is considered a hidden classic by fans. It follows a group of scientists who make a documentary about a suspected bear poacher, but what they find is actually much older and more sinister.

With great visuals (for a found footage movie) and an interesting take on Norwegian mythology, it is definitely worth your time.

4. Creep 1-2 (2015/2017)

We decided to include both parts of this psychological horror, as they provide a great character arc for the titular serial killer.

They may not be the most famous films on our list, but they both have twisted plots, dark, almost comedic atmospheres, and compelling characters, especially the aforementioned killer.

If you are a fan of found-footage horror and are looking for something different, these movies are definitely for you.

3. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)

This is more of a classic found-footage horror movie, which is surprisingly good.

The story revolves around an elderly woman with Alzheimer’s disease, but as the movie progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that the disease is not the only thing haunting poor Deborah.

2. Chronicle (2012)

Starring Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, and Michael B. Jordan, this film offers a unique take on the superhero genre through the lens of one of the characters’ camera.

When Seattle teenagers are suddenly given superhuman abilities, their lives are turned upside down as they react differently to the unexpected gift.

1. Cloverfield (2008)

Upon its release, this film presented a fresh take on the giant monster invasion sub-genre by making it found-footage style.

As an unknown creature begins to ravage New York City, a group of friends desperately try to escape amidst the growing chaos.
