At least 46% or less of a majority of Filipino adults, defined as optimistic, expect their quality of life to improve in the next 12 months amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed. .
The SWS survey, conducted last June 26 to 29 and the last conducted under the then administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, also found that 40 percent of Filipino adults said their quality of life will remain the same, while only 4 percent classified by SWS as a pessimist he said it would get worse.
The remaining 11% did not answer.
This results in a net personal optimism of +42, categorized by SWS as excellent (+40 and above).
However, the June 2022 net personal optimism score of +42 is three points above the +39 recorded in April 2022, a figure categorized as very high.
The net personal optimism score of +42 in June 2022 is also the same figure recorded in December 2021 and only 2 points below the pre-pandemic level of +44 in December 2019.
High hopes for the non-hungry, very hungry
Specifically, net personal optimism is higher among non-hungry families, reaching +43 among adults who belong to families that have not experienced hunger in the past three months.
Those belonging to families that experienced hunger overall posted +35 net personal optimism, higher than those belonging to families that experienced moderate hunger (+34).
Those belonging to families that experienced severe famine, however, reached a higher +40 net personal optimism.
A June 2022 SWS survey found that 11.6 percent of Filipino families, or roughly 2.9 million, experienced involuntary hunger—being hungry and having nothing to eat—at least once in the past three months.
The survey question about respondents’ predictions of how their quality of life would change over the next 12 months has been asked 145 times since April 1984, SWS said.
“Of the 145 surveys, the net personal optimism score was negative only 11 times, reaching an all-time low of -19 in May 2020 amid the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. Since then, it has risen again, but has not yet reached pre-pandemic levels,” he adds.
The June 26-29, 2022 survey question about respondents’ prediction of how their quality of life would change over the next 12 months was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 1,500 adults (ages 18 and over) nationwide, broken down by Po 300 in Metro Manila, Visayas and Mindanao and 600 in Balance Luzon.
“Face-to-face is the standard method of interviewing for social weather stations; the only exceptions were at the beginning of the pandemic, when movement restrictions made face-to-face meetings impossible and mobile phone interviews were conducted,” SWS said.
“Normal face-to-face field operations resumed in November 2020,” it added.
The sampling error margins of the same June SWS survey were ±2.5% for the national percentages, ±5.7% each for Metro Manila, Visayas and Mindanao, and ±4.0% for Balance Luzon.
“Area estimates were weighted by the Philippine Statistics Authority’s 2022 average population projections to arrive at the national estimates,” SWS said. —KG, GMA News
