James Cameron’s Avatar is well-known for being one of the most impressive films, with outstanding visual effects and graphics. The most recent sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, has lived up to its hype as even better than the sequel. Its storyline and effects have received much praise, but Avatar isn’t the only space-epic adventure with vivid imagery.
Space is always a fascinating setting, which is why many of these movies catch the audience’s attention, especially when aliens, humanoid or not, are involved. Although not all of these might have the world-building Avatar does, they are just as entertaining and worth the watch.
1986
When Avatar first came out, a lot of comparisons were made to Aliens, especially since Sigourney Weaver starred in both films and played a major character, Dr. Grace Augustine, Kiri Sully, and Ellen Ripley, respectively. Actors aside, though, Avatar is often thought of as Aliens, but with somewhat less violence and body horror.
Aliens is another film that James Cameron directed, which includes the malicious Xenomorphs who need to be destroyed by the surviving humans. Avatar features considerably more heroic aliens who need to protect themselves from antagonistic humans. This is often an inside joke among fans since the similarities are transparent.
9/10 Prometheus & Avatar Center On Humans Exploring Different Planets

Prometheus is a well-known film part of the Alien franchise and universe. Although Avatar is similar to Aliens, it bears even more likeness to its prequel film. Prometheus is about humans who explore the environment of a different planet in order to discover more about the extraterrestrials who created them.
This is very similar to how, in Avatar, humans explore the planet of Pandora and its natives. However, the humans in Avatar have much more ill intentions. Also, while the aliens in Prometheus are all hostile, the Na’vi are relatively peaceful. Overall, both films share similar plots.
8/10 Transformers Feature Aliens Who Befriend Humans, Just Like The Na’vi Do With Some Humans

Transformers is one of the most popular franchises that’s been around since the ’80s. What makes it similar to Avatar is its unique species of extraterrestrials who are also benevolent beings. The Autobots and Na’vi mean no true harm to humanity, but they can still be quite dangerous.
Both Transformers and Avatar also focus on strong bonds of the unlikely friendship between one of the humans and extraterrestrials — particularly, Jake Sully’s relationship with Neytiri in Avatar and Sam Witwicky and Cade Yaegar’s friendship with Optimus Prime. Likewise, both films also show how far these relationships go, with both humans and non-humans working together to protect each other and their people.
7/10 Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes & Avatar Show War Between Humanity & Non-Humans

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is a trilogy that amazed many audiences. The new films’ graphics were an enormous improvement from the original films, and the overall story was much more interesting. The trilogy centers on extremely intelligent apes who wage war against humanity.
This is similar to Avatar, as the Na’vi have no choice but to fight back against the humans who are attempting to seize their planet’s resources, to the point of beginning a war that is still ongoing in the Avatar series. Both of the films earned their popularity due to the incredible graphics and portrayal of non-human characters as well as the devastating effects of war created by humans.
6/10 Star Wars & Avatar Are Incredible Space Epics
1978
Avatar is described as a “space epic” due to it taking place outside of Earth. Star Wars is similarly famous for being a fantasy-based story set primarily in space. Not only are both films still wildly popular, but they also have very similar settings.
Avatar takes place on the planet of Pandora, while Star Wars takes place in other planets such as Naboo or Tatooine. Both films also have memorable characters like Jake Sully and Neytiri in Avatar and Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Han Solo in Star Wars. Additionally, both movies are classic tales about heroic humans who are destined to bring down antagonists who desire to take control over a certain world.
5/10 Atlantis & Avatar Are All About Discovery Of A Different World
2001
One of the most underrated Disney movies is Atlantis: The Lost Empire. While it bombed in theaters, it’s fondly remembered as an interesting story about a likable protagonist who sought to discover the world of Atlantis while also falling in love. This premise is very similar to Avatar.
Jake Sully might have had a mission, but he grew accustomed to the culture and ways of the Na’vi and found love in Neytiri. Similarly, both movies have their main protagonists fight back against the antagonists in order to protect their new worlds from human greed.
4/10 Arrival Shows How Aliens & Humans Can Work Together, Like The Humans & The Na’vi In Avatar
2016
Arrival is a science fiction thriller film about two unusual aliens called Heptapods who show up on Earth with uncertain intentions. However, it’s revealed later on that the Heptapods are actually passive creatures who seek to communicate with humanity for aid. Although it’s slightly different from Avatar, its benevolent aliens are similar to the Na’vi.
In general, Avatar’s Na’vi species are peaceful creatures who do not seek war, not even against humans. The Na’vi only become hostile when their people or land is threatened. Additionally, both films highlight how communication between humans and the Heptapods and the Na’vi is what enables them to learn from each other and create a sort of bond.
3/10 The Godzilla Franchise & Avatar Are About The Coexistence Between Humans & Otherworldly Beings
2014
Godzilla, much like Avatar, is an ongoing film franchise. Although Godzilla’s franchise is a reboot, its themes and elements are very similar to Avatar’s. As a series about giant kaiju, monsters such as Godzilla and King Kong are at odds with the humans who are trying to learn more about them when they emerge in their world.
On the contrary, the humans arrive on Pandora in an attempt to learn more about the Na’vi, which creates conflict when the humans enact violence and destruction. Despite that small difference, similarities between the franchises are still there. The fluctuating relationship between humanity and otherworldly creatures is the primary focus of both Avatar and Godzilla.
2/10 Pacific Rim & Avatar Include Humans & Machinery Against Alien Nature
2013
Pacific Rim is very similar to Godzilla. The creatures are called kaiju, which befit monsters such as Godzilla and Ghidorah. However, Pacific Rim is still similar to Avatar in many other aspects.
Pacific Rim shows how humanity worked to fight back against kaiju through the use of robotic forms called “Yaegers.” This is reminiscent of the “avatars” in Avatar, which are Na’vi/human-hybrid creations used by humans to explore the world of Pandora. Pacific Rim and Avatar also have a lot of graphic battle scenes between humans and monsters to demonstrate how humanity advances technology for the sake of research or war.
1/10 Ferngully & Avatar Highlight The Beauty Of Nature & How Humans Can Impact It
1992
Ferngully may seem like an odd choice, but there are some similarities between this film and Avatar. Ferngully is a story about a fairy named Crysta who discovers the existence of humans by meeting a human boy. The film also explores themes of nature, pollution, and human interference as the human boy, Zak, falls in love with Crysta.
This concept is very much like the relationship between Jake and Neytiri in Avatar. Jake’s character is also similar to Zak’s, as he explores a different world while falling in love with a non-human. Like Zak, Jake also learns about how precious and beautiful Pandora is, which inspires him to side against humanity for the sake of preserving the new world.
