The horror film My Best Friend’s Exorcism is available to stream on Prime Video on September 30, 2022 and will appeal to fans of stories about friendship, the 1980s, and demonic possession. Adapted from Grady Hendrix’s book, the movie sees Abby Rivers trying to get rid of the demon who has taken over Gretchen Lang’s body. Anita Lesnicki, who goes by Needy, is stunned to see Jennifer Check become possessed and start murdering people. Anita’s journey is different from Abby’s, as Jennifer’s Body becomes darker and darker as the movie progresses, but the film will still appeal to fans who like these kinds of demon possession stories.
The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018)

Megan Reed is working the night shift at the morgue in The Possession of Hannah Grace and the film has a pitch perfect setting as it’s tough to imagine something creepier and more off-putting than spending time in this dark and cold location.
The film is great for fans of My Best Friend’s Exorcism as Megan is learning about the world of exorcisms and what happened to the ghost who is now haunting the place where she works. The movies have different tones as one is comedic and one is more serious but they still have some things in common.

In Wes Craven’s Deadly Friend, teenager Paul Conway is dealing with an absolutely terrifying and strange situation: his crush Samantha Pringle has died and he puts a microchip in her brain. While this does create a robotic version of Samantha, which seems like a good idea at first, she soon proves that messing with life and death is dangerous.
The main characters in Deadly Friend and My Best Friend’s Exorcism both race against the clock to save a friend/love interest, and the fact that they are dealing with a robot and demonic possession is a sharp contrast to the innocent high school life they lead.
A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)

A Nightmare On Elm Street is an enduring, horrifying classic that is well-made and well-acted, with a favorite villain and clever final girl. Nancy Thompson’s encounters with terrifying supernatural villain Freddy Krueger always feel as relevant as ever thanks to the strong story.
While Nancy is dealing with a monster who kills people when they’re sleeping and not demonic possession, she still sees her high school life take a devastating and chilling turn as her normal routine is cast aside and she has to fight to live. Abby goes through a similar journey and since both movies are set in the 1980s, they’re a perfect pair.
Host (2020)

Host was shot entirely on Zoom and features a group of friends chatting during the COVID-19 pandemic. The call goes in a sinister direction when a demon takes over. The characters are horrified and have no idea how to act. This is the last thing that anyone would think would happen on a video chat so this plot works perfectly.
While the main plot is a bit similar to My Best Friend’s Exorcism, the movies are fun to watch close to each other as they have different, opposite tones. Host is genuinely scary as the characters are paralyzed with fear and it’s fun to see everything take place on a computer screen.
It Follows (2015)

In the beloved horror movie It Follows, Jay Height is on a journey not unlike Abby’s: to figure out why a curse is being passed among her friend group and if there’s anything that she can possibly do to stop it. Jay and Abby are shocked by what’s happening and definitely wish that they could return to their regular high school life.
It Follows is so creative, stylish, and smart, and the entire film has an eerie feeling, which works since Jay is being watched by a figure at every turn.
Hereditary (2018)

Hereditary is one of the best horror movies about motherhood as Annie Graham’s place in her family takes a terrible turn. Annie is taken over by Paimon, a demon who is part of her family’s history, and horror fans agree that these scenes are some of the most shocking and disturbing from the genre.
Since Annie’s life goes down a darker path than My Best Friend’s Exorcism, it’s fascinating to see the opposite journeys that Annie and Gretchen go on. One is closely tied to a disturbing family backstory and another is a high schooler in the ’80s just trying to have fun and be cool.
The Craft: Legacy (2020)

The Craft: Legacy has all the nostalgia of My Best Friend’s Exorcism since it’s a remake of the popular ’90s film and it shares a similar main storyline of protecting and saving friends. Lily Schechner moves to a new town and forms a coven with Lourdes, Tabby, and Frankie.
The characters try to use their magical abilities to help, and when one of them is in trouble, they gather together. The film definitely takes on the theme of the power of friendship, which is present in Prime Video’s new film as well as Abby and Gretchen are super close.
Scream (2022)

Scream (2022) may be about a killer following in Ghostface’s footsteps and not demons, but it’s an excellent high school story about friends who work as a team. They want to save each other and get out alive, just like Abby wants to save Gretchen’s soul.
The best characters in Scream (2022) understand the true meaning of friendship and while they might joke around and reference horror movies, they definitely care a lot about each other and hope that they can get through this ordeal. Abby and Gretchen’s story feels nostalgic since it’s set in the ’80s and every new Scream film will have that nostalgic feeling as well since horror fans love the franchise so much.
Fright Night (2011)

The 2011 remake of Fright Night has a lot in common with My Best Friend’s Exorcism: strong teenage characters with determination and intelligence, plus supernatural creatures who wreak havoc on those high schoolers’ regular lives. It’s great that both movies maintain a strong sense of humor throughout as this is a fun contrast to the evil that they’re dealing with.
While Abby is dealing with a demon taking over Gretchen, Charley Brewster is scared of his new neighbor Jerry Dandrige, who he can tell is a vampire. Charley races to save himself, his mom and his love interest, and the result is a hilarious yet moving film.
