With Avatar: The Way of Water reinvigorating the public’s interest in sci-fi movies, many Netflix subscribers will be eager to see what the platform has for them in the genre.
Though the original Avatar isn’t currently streaming on Netflix, there are a number of other great sci-fi movies from the 2000s that are available now and demonstrate that, while the best sci-fi movies on Netflix come from all different kinds of eras, the ones from the 2000s are especially awesome.
Star Trek (2009)
The Star Trek franchise was given a new jolt of energy when put in the hands of director JJ Abrams so that he could create a new series of movies. Though the story in the film uses characters and designs from The Original Series, Abrams’ movie had a whole new tone and look for the franchise.
Uniting the original crew of the Enterprise in their youth to fight a Romulan villain who’s traveled back through time, the plot of the movie incorporates a lot of the franchise’s greatest hits and even more of Abrams’ breathless style of action. It’s the cast that really makes it shine though, with stellar takes on a host of beloved characters.
The Mist (2007)
Adapted from a story by prolific horror author Stephen King, The Mist is a dark tale of social breakdown and survival in a grocery store that’s suddenly surrounded by a thick mist containing terrifying and deadly monsters.
As is often the case with the best Stephen King stories, the real horror lies in the minds of the characters and the decisions that they make, and director Frank Darabont takes that idea to its extreme. The film has a notorious ending that caps off its disturbing look at human psychology under pressure and has the power to stick with viewers for days after.
Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005)
Director Jon Favreau makes this spin-off of Jumanji a modern kid’s movie classic through his famous balancing act with practical and computer-generated effects. Like Jumanji, the movie follows two kids who play a mysterious board game that comes to life and takes them on a dangerous adventure.
Instead of the jungle adventure themes seen in the Jumanji movies, Zathura takes the action to space and treats sci-fi fans with many old-school designs that have been given a new-school makeover with modern effects.
Men In Black II (2002)
Both Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones returned for this sequel to the hit 1997 sci-fi comedy Men in Black. The pair play alien-policing agents who must save the world again as they get back into the groove that they lost at the end of the previous film.
For sci-fi movie fans though, what shines brightest in the film are Rick Baker’s plentiful alien designs and their execution. Men in Black II expanded the franchise’s already weird and wonderful universe and laid the groundwork for several more sequels in the future too, so it remains a worthwhile watch after two decades.
Land Of The Lost (2009)
An adaptation of the 1970s series of the same name, but in name only, Land of the Lost takes the comedic riffing of Will Ferrell and Danny McBride and puts it into a fantastical sci-fi adventure.
Considering that the premise revolves around scientists trapped in a time warp with dinosaurs, it’s not surprising that the film chooses to take things less seriously than most sci-fi comedies. However, the talents of the cast warrant the shift in tone and this is a great choice for Netflix subscribers who are looking for a lighter side to sci-fi.
Spider-Man (2002)
Sam Raimi helped to define the modern age of comic book movies with his live-action blockbuster about the origins of Marvel’s iconic hero Spider-Man. Though many of its techniques and story beats may seem uninspired now, the passion that went into making them a reality on screen for the first time still shines through 20 years later.
With Tobey Maguire pitch-perfect as Peter Parker and Willem Dafoe delivering an unforgettably maniacal performance as the Green Goblin, Spider-Man remains an unbeatable modern classic about super-powered scientists causing havoc in New York.
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Sam Raimi and his team doubled down on everything that made the first Spider-Man movie so great when they returned for the sequel, and Alfred Molina delivered yet another out-of-control scientist for the ages with his performance as Doctor Octopus.
While developing the romantic storyline set up in the first movie, and going bigger with the action sequences, Spider-Man 2 also sets up an epic finale. The film is generally regarded as one of the best comic book movie sequels ever made if not just one of the best sequels ever made.
Spider-Man 3 (2007)
Though it was not as well received as Raimi’s previous two Spider-Man movies, and the plans for a fourth movie would sadly never come to fruition, Spider-Man 3 is still packed with all the charm and action that made the other films so great.
The movie is an emotional conclusion to the running plot thread with Harry Osborn, pitting Spider-Man against three villains at once: Sandman, the new Green Goblin, and Venom. While that may be too much for some, it guarantees that the story and the action scenes are never dull.
Resident Evil (2002)
The world’s most famous series of zombie survival horror video games was given its first live-action movie in 2002 starring Milla Jovovich in the lead role, and while the film may only have incorporated certain elements of the games, it developed its own fan base and series of sequels.
The movie follows a team of soldiers who have to infiltrate a top-secret bio-weapons facility that’s controlled by a rogue AI. They soon find out that the facility’s experiments have resulted in a zombie outbreak and have to fight for survival. For those who love the combination of science-fiction, horror, and action, this is a great guilty pleasure.
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
Milla Jovovich returned for the sequel to Paul W.S. Anderson’s original Resident Evil movie to fight against one of the most iconic monsters from the video games, the fearsome Nemesis.
Apocalypse takes the story out from a secret underground location and places it in a city destroyed by a wider zombie outbreak. The focus on over-the-top action and reinterpretations of classic characters from the games satisfied fans of the original and set the tone for four more sequels with Jovovich leading, whilst being highly entertaining in the process.
