Yami Gautam Dhar speaks on women-centric films in cinema; lauds industry for “evolving”
When asked if she feels that Bollywood has changed when it comes to women-centric stories. In her response, she asserted, “Speaking of the term “women-centric”, I feel it will disappear soon. The logic behind this is – when it was coined, at that time, math and economics were different as a major chunk of films were dominated by males. But now, it doesn’t matter. The audience is more concerned about the character and not about the fact that which gender is playing it. A female is playing, a male is playing it doesn’t matter, it’s the character and the story that matter.”
She further explained, “It takes a generation for change, and every generation is bringing change. For example, Mother India. Looking at the time when it was released, I don’t think at that time these kinds of subjects were discussed. Another example is the late actress Smita Patil. I still watch her interviews. I wish she was alive. How aware these actresses were about the presentation of women’s characters on the screen.”
Concluding her take, the actress added, “Coming back to the present day, I feel we have come a long way, and the film industry has been constantly evolving. I hope better characters will be written for actresses in the future, and if the writing is strong, the performance will ultimately impress the audience as all they want is a good film. “
