Speed Queen – the story of Michelle Mouton’s rise to the top of rallying in the 1980s – was awarded an International Emmy yesterday (Monday).
Queen of Speed was released late last year and is a Sky Original documentary produced by Drum Studios and directed by Barbie McLaurin.
Through breathtaking archival footage and personal interviews with Mouton herself, navigator Fabricia Pons plus rivals Ari Vatanen and Walter Roerl, the film tells the story of Mouton’s rise to the top of world rallying in the 1970s and 1980s.
Mouton became an icon of the sport when he drove a fire-breathing Audi Quattro to four wins and nine podiums in the FIA World Rally Championship in the 1980s. Even today, 40 years later, she remains the only woman to outright win a WRC rally.

Those achievements were recognized yesterday (Monday) when ‘Speed Queen’ was named Best Sports Documentary at the 50th International Emmy Awards in New York.
“It was a big surprise just to hear from Drum Studios about the nomination,” an excited Mouton told WRC.com. “I didn’t expect anything, which makes it even more incredible.
“I made this film because I wanted to leave a trace of my career for my granddaughters, since I never wrote a book. It was really fun to do it and try to remember all the details forgotten after so many years!
