The film, which is presented in five parts, was directed by award-winning directors Tom Zimney and Oren Moverman. Including Nelson’s own contributions, it chronicles the many ups and downs of his epic life and career. Also includes interviews with friends and family members, as well as access to his personal archives.

Sundance 2023 will be held January 19-29 in Park City, Salt Lake City and the Sundance Resort. Nelson’s screening will be staged alongside Blackbird Presents and Sight Unseen. The film was developed by the artist’s longtime manager Mark Rothbaum and Blackbird Presents founder and chief creative officer Keith Wortman. The documentary is executive produced by Wortman, Rothbaum, Annie Nelson, Yulia Lebedev, Eddie Weisman, Leonid Lebedev, Sean Stewart and Mark Ankner.

The project was announced last summer, when Rothbaum and Wortman noted, “Telling Willie’s story has been a lifelong dream of ours, and we feel privileged to realize that dream with Tom, Oren and Sight Unseen. Words like “honored,” “thrilled,” and “humbled” don’t come close to describing how we feel about being entrusted to tell Willie’s story.

“And what a story it is! We celebrate music, career, long road, family, friends and history,” the couple continued. “But more than anything, we are piecing together a narrative – one that has never before been seen in its entirety – of an extraordinary man with a unique ability to bring people together; people of all races, orientations, genders, political ideologies and musical inclinations. We can certainly use the healing powers of Willie Nelson these days.
