Korean boy band BTS consists of seven members – Jin, J-Hope, RM, Suga, Jungkook, Vand Jimin. Although the band enjoys a crazed fan following, there has been a great deal of debate as to whether or not the band members should do compulsory military service. The law states that all men between the ages of 18 and 35 must serve in the army for at least 18 months. So now there are discussions about BTS members being exempted from the same. Now South Korea’s Ministry of Defense has also shared some thoughts on this.

At the 4th plenary session, Min Hongcheol, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, raised the issue of BTS members joining the military. The politician asked what the status of the decision was. He questioned whether the decision could be taken based on an online survey. South Korea’s defense minister reportedly told a parliamentary meeting that a decision on BTS’s military enlistment would be made based on the results of the survey.

Regarding Min Hongcheol’s question, Minister of National Defense Lee Jong Seop stated that the ministry has not yet made any decision regarding the exemption of BTS members from mandatory military service. He also mentioned that it is difficult to make changes in the system on the issue of BTS military service. The statement read: “On this, Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop said: ‘To reiterate the position of the Ministry of National Defense, there is no change in the existing position that it is difficult to expand the alternative service system under conditions of fairness of military duty. service on the matter of BTS military service. I believe that the most important duty of military service among the four duties under the Constitution is to be performed in accordance with laws and principles. I hope that the minister’s opinion will be confirmed.”
In the past, BTS members have talked about opting out of mandatory military service and have stated that they will accept and respect any decision made by their company HYBE.
