Shah Rukh Khan is one of the biggest Bollywood stars today. He has a kind of fan base that knows no bounds. He redefined romance on the big screen and made the ladies fall in love with everything all over again. And if you ask King Khan to whom he attributes his success, he will simply say that he is nothing without Yash Chopra.
In 2017, Shah Rukh Khan talked about how he became the ‘king of romance’ with films like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Devdas, Veer Zaara and Jab Tak Hai Jaan. But when he started working with Yash Chopra in Dar, he was a bad guy who killed and misbehaved with people without being on drugs.
“I remember Yashji telling me that until I play a lover, nothing will happen or change for me professionally. I didn’t want to be a lover since I’m not good with romance. I felt I wasn’t good looking enough. I don’t think I was good enough to play a lover. But Yashji kept telling me that if I don’t play a lover on screen, nothing will happen to my career, my career will not move forward,” Shah Rukh had said.
He then added: “When he tells you something, over and over again, it really makes some sense. So even though I don’t look like a romantic hero or act like one, I just had to follow his beliefs and I did and it paid dividends. Yash Chopra single-handedly created my career. I feel honored to receive the fourth Yash Chopra National Memorial Award. I am who I am because of what Yash Chopra made me do. I thank him for that.”
Shah Rukh had said that Yash Chopra is like a father to him. If not for the director, the superstar would not have visited Kashmir. His mother, his Kashmir, and his father had told him that one place you cannot see without me is Kashmir. “So I never went there. The former chief minister of the place had invited me and I had also said no to him. “I didn’t go till the time Yashji decided to do ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. for me it was like visiting the most beautiful place in Kashmir and I went with my father (referring to Yash Chopra) and family,” he said.
