What the Seahawks said after the 27-26 preseason loss to the Cowboys

Our preseason effort here tonight. The boys played very hard. Play hard. Hang in there. As you all know, it’s really tough when you go out minus one in the turnover ratio. Tonight we were down by five in a one point ball game, but these guys didn’t stop fighting and scratching and scratching staying in the game. I was really proud of them. It was a good effort from colleagues overall. Start on the defensive side of the ball. Dublanco, he again had double-digit rebounds and some good hits. You did a really good job. Miles played really good football for us again. Josh got a goodie bag tonight. It couldn’t be more obvious, but Michael Jackson played really good football. He played a great game tonight. He made a bunch of plays. Physical, healthy and all that. He really capped off a massive pre-season for himself.

On the other hand, what we did well tonight is we controlled the ball a little bit. We defended very well. It’s probably the best defense we’ve had anywhere. The quarterbacks had a chance and could see what they needed to see. The ball was all over the place for Dallas tonight. Geno was solid tonight in his outing and Geno will start. Geno will begin the opening. He earned it. He won the job. Drew just ran out of time to make his offer on him. I understand. I just wanted to let you know so everyone knows so you don’t have to ask about it anymore. Meanwhile, Drew has to keep fighting because he has all kinds of things in him and I want him to be ready at a moment’s call. It will continue to grow, insist and evolve. He is a fantastic player and I have no problem playing with him either. We’re fortunate to have two guys who can play, and if he comes off the bench when he gets his chance, he’ll be ready to play. We’re seeing a different group than we saw here in the preseason because of all the guys we rely on so much. Rashaad Penny. I’ve seen Kenny Walker come out and leave. He will have a chance to do so for the opener. Lockett and DK, our tight ends and that group, I’m really excited for them. Especially because the offensive line really performed well in the preseason. We’re going to count on these guys to continue to improve and keep going. We had a couple of guys get hammered tonight. We’re going to see a lot of guys back there.

So here we are. Two weeks left. These days will be precious. We’re getting ready for Monday night. It’s a great opening. It’s a great chance to play for the league on Monday night. We’ll see from this week. Replays go to all the guys who are going to play.

On what Geno did to win the starting job.

He just keeps winning. Because we really put it up against the competition. Drew shoots it all the way. These guys got along great. They really couldn’t have done it any better. He will give us the best chance to play great football right from the start.

The bottom line is ultimately how much care for the ball.

That’s a huge statement when you care about football. We’ve been one of the best teams over the last few years in the NFL at taking care of the football. It’s really hard to take it away from us. Decision making goes along with it. Appreciating this football too.

What was your take on Drew’s three-interception night?

Everyone was different. There was a ricochet. He had one then, I haven’t talked to him about the specifics of it. I don’t want to talk about it, but it’s really hard to win when the ball is flying into their hands. We have to do a better job. And we also have to help when the ball is deflected. I didn’t see it either, so I didn’t get a good look at it. We’ll see in about half an hour.

On the play of the running game.

I thought we were pretty stable again. We have a ways to go and I think the commitment is there. The personality of the guys up front is there. The athleticism is there and our runners were ready. I thought Homer had a great preseason. DeeJay had a great preseason. These guys – the best we’ve ever had.

On how Abe Lucas handled the launch.

Overall, I’m very happy with it. He did a fantastic job for a first half man. But both guys, coming from the same system, different parts of the country, have made the transition to being run guys. They come off the cliff, they’re both physical, athletic. It finishes well, which is what I’m looking for.

Included if Sidney Jones is coming back soon.

Sydney just cleans things up with the concussion. Let’s cross our fingers that it can. He feels fine 99% of the time. He still has a little something in there, so we’re just being very careful with him. But in two weeks it should be ready to go.

On Drew Lock’s ability to play.

I have no doubt he can play. He has all the athleticism. He has arm strength. He has talent. He has creativity, all of that. I think he will be a fantastic footballer soon.
