Welcome to Style Diaries, a series where we research the physical manifestations of our closet tours IRL. We’re asking friends and tastemakers to show us what they’re *actually* wearing during the week and to provide a little insight into their thoughts on the current state of fashion. This week, we follow Caroline Maguire, the fashion director at Shopbop as she gears up for fall—it’s back to school for the kids and back to fashion week for her. As someone who catalogs trends for a living, Maguire loves to test out those statement pieces in her own wardrobe, toning them down with easy pieces like denim and classic tanks.

Look 1: Back to School Drop-off

“This is an easy look for morning drop-off. It’s bright; it’s an oversized sweater. The sweater is from AGR, which is London-based, and it’s brand new to Shopbop. The knit is very novel; it’s really in line with my aesthetic. And then it’s back to really easy shorts. These ones are from Denimist, which is the R13 sister line. I like that they have this acidy tone to them. For shoes, these Marni slides are [also] super easy. I’m rushing out the door, always losing track of time. Those slides are knit, so they’re super comfortable—you’re in and out. For the bag, [I wanted] something fun. It’s JW Anderson.”

Look 2: Coffee Meetings

“This is [what I wear] to have coffee with a friend, just catching up, weekend brunch. This bag is amazing. The braided detail is everything. It can hold anything, seriously—coffee, wipes, hand sanitizer, pajamas, whatever you need. It’s the perfect tote. And if you’re a mom, it’s the bag to have. I love this crocheted sweater from Sea New York with Khaite’s ‘Kerrie’ jeans. If you love denim, you have to buy these jeans. I size up, because I don’t like them skin tight. I am obsessed with this pair. Then, I kept it more neutral with the lace-up sandals. The sunglasses are Isabel Marant. I really like the light shade of the lens.”

Look 3: Market Appointments

“This is [what I wear during] Fashion Week—to market, meeting with designers, looking at new brands with my buyers. The blazer is Lioness. The miniskirt is Monse, which we all know and love. I’m memorizing this part. I paired these Alexander Wang loafers, which are super fun, with trouser socks. The bag is so great. It’s a little box bag from Acne Studios. It goes with so many outfits. Then the tank is just a neutral, fitted tank from WSLY, which I layered with some personal charms and a twisted chain.”

“This outfit is my go-to outfit when I come home from a busy day of work and need to go grab tea or have some wine with one of my girlfriends. Of course, I’m really into Western boots now; these are from Isabel Marant. This shade is a beautiful dark oxblood idea, which is really fun. I paired them with these denim shorts, which are R13. The top is Lug Von Siga. They’re known for their tops. I love the idea of masculine and feminine—the oversized bermuda shorts with a very, very feminine top.”

“[This dress] is one of my favorites. It’s perfect for a summer date night, because it’s crocheted. This dress is from Wales Bonner—it’s so exciting to finally have them on our site. We are all such fans of [designer Grace Wales Bonner]. You can’t tell, but the back is low cut. I paired it with these really comfy Stuart Weitzman sandals. The pearl detail goes really well with the dress. And then there’s that Acne bag again, because it does go with everything. And then, of course, the Bottega [Veneta] sunglasses—I’m obsessed with anything Bottega right now. And I just love really easy hoops, and these ones are from Luv Aj. I kept jewelry to a minimum, because the dress is so wow—a statement piece. It’s so hot, so this definitely lets the air filter through, because it’s crocheted.”

Notes on Style:

How would you describe your own sense of personal style?

“I think my personal style is definitely trend-driven, but I do like to balance that with something more laid back and chill—not super uptight or serious. Right now, I’m really obsessed with the idea of mixing masculine and feminine [pieces] together. I’m a huge fan of mixing prints. Shopbop in general, is such a print and color-driven company, which is definitely up my alley. [I like to be] bold and loud with my style choices, which is fun.

Tell us about your lifestyle. What sorts of things do you need to get dressed for on a regular basis?

“Oh my gosh, my life is madness right now. In September, we’re back into the grind of work and mom mode. So every day is really different. I tend to maintain my core style DNA, obviously dressing for comfort, but having fun, and being really playful with what I’m wearing. But it’s really based on activities that I’m doing for that day. For example, if it’s the weekend, I’m doing activities with the kids. I am that soccer mom, I never thought I’d be. So I want to make sure my outfit is super comfortable, that it’s pulled together, but not stale or boring. I’m usually wearing denim shorts, with a really cool oversized t-shirt, or oversized sweater. During the work week, when I’m going into market, or meetings with editors, I would obviously be more polished than I would be for the weekend. I think it just is a case-by-case, day-by-day question of what to wear.”

Do you have any semblance of a uniform?

“I do think my go-to is always going to be a fun piece of novelty denim, whether it’s a denim short from R13 or Denimist or just a super high waisted, pleated, oversized denim pant from Agolde or Goldsign. Any denim with novelty flare is my core. And then I’ll play around with it, like I’ll add an easy t-shirt, but I’ll pile on the necklaces. Or an oversized sweater that is bright and colorful, and lace-up sandals.”

You kind of eat, sleep, breath fashion for your career, how does that influence how you’re getting dressed in the morning?

“I do take it to heart. My job, obviously, is very much trend-driven, focusing on new brands, new trends of the season, what we’re looking for in the market, and new designers. We’re seeing them everywhere from designer appointments to street style. I definitely take all that and apply them [to my own wardrobe]. It’s inspiration for my own personal style, like, ‘I’m going to try this. It’s out of the box.’ Then I can bring it back to Shopbop, and see if it’ll apply to our customer, because our customer is so open to newness, and to different ways of wearing things.”

What are the trends you’re really excited for this Fall?

“Oh my gosh, there are so many. I know it’s scary to say, but Western is back. Western boots I’m really excited about, only because I think there’s so much you can do with them. Wear them with a miniskirt or really cool trousers, instead of making it so kitschy, like a cowboy or a cowgirl. Another one is miniskirts. Obviously, we’re still playing into the miniskirt trend from that [Miu Miu show]. I’m definitely still excited about miniskirts. And then this idea of, we like to call it daytime drama, for Fall. It’s all this idea of sequin, lurex, diamante—ideas that you usually [associate] with cocktail [attire], but worn for day, styling it with cool denim. Or you’re wearing a cocktail dress with Converse high tops. And blazers, we always love oversized blazers. Those are fun.”

Completing the look, what is your typical hair and makeup routine?

Every day, my hair is either in a messy top knot, because I sometimes just can’t be bothered or it is just loose and down. Those are seriously the only two looks for my hair. And then for makeup, I love makeup, but I’m really more into my skin routine these days. I think everyone is. If I could have any makeup [product] for the rest of my life, it would be mascara. I think I’ve tried every type of mascara out there. I use three right now. It’s MAC In Extreme Dimension Waterproof Mascara. The NARS one is really good too, and the Marc Jacobs.”
