Today we sit down with Christine Meisen, aka Sister Kate, one of the founders of Sisters of the Valley. Here, she walks us through the brand’s faith-based concepts, its core values, and what the future holds for the company.

The formation of the Sisters of the Valley

The Sisters of the Valley brand was born out of the Occupy movement when Sister Kate saw a need for herbal healing and spirituality that was not fraught with controversy and injustice. But at the time, Sister Kate wasn’t a sister at all—she was just a woman taking care of her family.

However, when she saw how the world began to mock health and wellness, especially for women, Sister Kate was furious. “And I remember saying to the boys, ‘If pizza is a vegetable, I’m a nun.’ And my nephew said, ‘You are,’ and then, ‘You should go get that.’ So I did.”

Beliefs and religions of nuns

From then on, Sister Kate and her fellow sisters sought to create something special, something legitimate, and something that placed Mother Earth at the center of their spirituality. “We looked at what were the 12 most important beliefs of our early ancestors, who were the first castle nurses of Europe, and the 12 most important beliefs of the Native Americans from the land of California… So in doing that, we got to [with our] belief system.”

It is important to note that Sister Kate is not a Catholic nun, nor has she ever been. In fact, this is the first time any of the sisters have experienced being a nun. However, Sister Kate did grow up in the Catholic religion, seeing firsthand the kinds of flaws that an organized religion like this exhibits.

Although she will always be a Catholic girl at heart, Sister Kate notes, “We come together to create a more graceful way of life in a more graceful walk together and support each other to do something that warms our heart, reduces suffering and causes healing. And it’s a very satisfying job. So by taking this purposeful walk together, it doesn’t matter if we did [religious] differences.”

The belief system has eight core values, but essentially Sisters of the Valley strives to respect Mother Nature and her gifts by using things like the energy of the moon and even meditative practices during cultivation.

Even as the women prune their plants, they keep the environment calm, and the nuns do not speak or listen to music. “The reason we don’t allow any music or talking [is because] we spent a lot of time meditating and praying to make our ancestors proud of us,” explains Sister Kate when asked about their practices. “And one of our core beliefs is that we have to keep in mind that the people who have gone before us, the people we are going with now, and the generations to come.”

Today, Sisters of the Valley has expanded and now has six grass nuns in the company itself. But the goal is always to grow bigger by letting others learn about the beauty of plant faith.

Weed Nuns Wanted: How the Sisters of the Valley Seek to Expand Their Community

Finding holistic healing is not something the Sisters want to keep from the general public. In fact, Sister Kate even told us, “I will not quit my job until there are grass nuns in every town, village, and province on the planet. I think that’s the mission.” She then went on to say, “What we are defending is not cannabis; we support holistic medicine and a kind of compassionate activism that holds lawmakers accountable for their sins. And we need more nuns everywhere.

I will not stop working until there are no grass nuns in every town, village and province on the planet.

For that to happen, Sister Kate and the other weed nuns believe the answer lies in something they call “enclaves.”

How enclaves are essential to the growth of the sisters

Essentially, these enclaves are like Sisters of the Valley franchises, only they operate them without any franchise fees. The nuns would pay a fee back to the sisters from product sales, but they would own and operate their own businesses – wherever they chose. This very idea is how Sister Flora, one of the other weed nuns, became the first person in Brazil to be licensed to grow medical cannabis. In her enclave, she worked with filmmakers and activists to achieve it, and is now making history in the South American country every day.

When asked about enclaves and their purpose, Sister Kate told us this: “We believe cannabis is like honey. Local is best. This will give you the required immunities for your region. So it’s more than energy: it’s science plus energy. So we’re always trying to grow.” She went on to say, “Our solution to our international problems is simply to create enclaves in these places and they can produce the medicine locally.”

This kind of holistic medicine practice can change the lives of so many communities – they just often don’t know how to start. “The point of this,” says Sister Kate, “is to have a personal handshake with people who are interested in helping us grow our enclave and for them to get enough information to really understand who we are.”

Next steps for the Sisters of the Valley

With the enclaves in mind and recovering from the damage caused by the pandemic, the Sisters of the Valley have hope for the future.

They are currently planning to expand their current product line from CBD only to their CBD Plus and even non-CBD product lines. The sisters are introducing products like mushroom coffee to help promote better overall health and wellness and expand their audience even further.

“We’re always expanding our product line – we can’t help it. We are women in product development and, well, the science continues to emerge,” explains Sister Kate.
