Science fiction and comedy are two genres that work well together. The outlandish and unrealistic elements of science fiction are always great segues into hilarious antics and wacky slapstick. Over the past few decades, Hollywood has done a great job turning sci-fi comedy into its own genre.
Perhaps it’s because things like aliens are so often very strange that it makes them a little funny. Or maybe comedy just blends well with every genre if the right writers are behind it. Hopefully, the film industry can continue combining genres to make more classic movies like these.
10 Bill And Ted’s Excellent Adventure
Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is a 1989 sci-fi comedy from Stephen Herek. The film stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter as dim-witted high school students who must travel through time to find historical figures for their school history project.
Excellent Adventure is the first of three Bill and Ted movies and is seen as a cult classic. The film is beloved by many for its quotable characters, unapologetically dumb humor, and hilarious performances from the two leads.
9 Idiocracy
Idiocracy is a 2006 underrated sci-fi film from legendary comedy writer Mike Judge. The film follows a painfully average military private named Joe played by Luke Wilson. Joe is selected for a top secret military hibernation program and is frozen in a chamber.
He ends up being forgotten and awakes in the year 2505 where everyone is so moronic that he’s easily the smartest man alive. While the film was a commercial failure, it remains one of the funniest comedies of the 2000s for its hilarious (and sometimes too relatable) look into the future.
8 Wall-E
Wall-E is an animated sci-fi comedy released in 2008 by Pixar Animation Studios. The film is set in the future where Earth has been turned into a garbage-filled wasteland and is only populated by robots.
The film follows a trash collecting robot named Wall-E as he leaves Earth and embarks on a space adventure that could save mankind. The film was praised for its stellar animation, commentary on consumerism and environmentalism, and hilarious moments the whole family can enjoy.
7 The World’s End
The World’s End is a 2013 film starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and is the third and final installment of Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy. The film centers on a group of five friends who return to their hometown to attempt their legendary pub crawl from 20 years ago.
They soon discover that they are amidst an alien invasion and may be humanity’s only hope. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost make for a hilarious duo once again and the film is filled with memorable gags and a unique depiction of alien invaders.
6 The Lobster
The Lobster is a black comedy from 2015 by acclaimed director Yorgos Lanthimos. The film stars Colin Farrell as David, a man who lives in a world where single people must find a mate before a certain age. He enters a hotel where people are given 45 days to find love or they will be turned into animals and sent into the wild.
The film is a beautifully acted slow burn that may not be for everyone but does offer a different take on a love story. It features elements of drama, science fiction, and dark comedy and provides great satire of couple-fixated society.
5 They Live
They Live is a 1988 science fiction film from John Carpenter starring Roddy Piper and Keith David. The film follows a drifter who discovers a pair of glasses that show the world for what it truly is.
The glasses show that Earth has been invaded by aliens who have infiltrated the ruling class and use things like subliminal messages, propaganda, and consumerism to control the population. The film offers great satire on how the upper class and unregulated capitalism affect Americans. It also features one of the funniest fight scenes in 80s action movie history.
4 Repo Man
Repo Man is a lesser known science fiction comedy from 1984 by director Alex Cox. The film stars Emilio Estevez as a recently hired repo man who must find a Chevy Malibu with a $20,000 bounty on it and something otherworldly stashed in the trunk.
The film was praised on release and considered one of the best films of 1984. Repo Man is praised for its punk rock soundtrack and aesthetic, unconventional story, and satire of consumerism.
3 Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2
It was hard choosing between the original Guardians of the Galaxy or Volume 2 but it’s the second film from 2017 that really manages to perfectly balance science fiction and comedy. The beloved Marvel film follows Star-Lord and the rest of the guardians as he encounters his celestial father named Ego.
This film has everything an audience can ask for; hilarious comedy, heartfelt moments, and incredible action set pieces. James Gunn managed to give each guardian an arc that developed them into some of the best characters the MCU has to offer.
2 Back To The Future
Back to the Future is one of the most iconic sci-fi comedies of all time. Released in 1985 by director Robert Zemeckis, Back to the Future introduced audiences to Marty McFly. Marty is a high school student who’s accidentally sent back in time 30 years in a time-traveling DeLorean with the eccentric scientist Doc Brown.
The film was a smash hit in 1985 and spawned two sequels. To this day it’s still loved for its memorable characters, witty humor, and incredible sense of adventure.
1 Ghostbusters
The only sci-fi comedy that might be more iconic than Back to the Future is Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters was released in 1984 and stars Bill Murray, Dan Aukroyd, and Harold Ramis.
The plot follows three parapsychologists who have been forced out of their university funding and decide to form a ghost removal service in New York City. The film was released to critical acclaim and made $282 million in its first theatrical run. Ghostbusters became a cultural phenomenon for its blend of comedy, action, and supernatural horror.
