Apple’s latest major software update for its iPhone line-up has just dropped, and there are some seriously cool new additions this year, particularly when it comes to your lock screen.
If you haven’t already received a notification to update to iOS 16, jump into your iPhone’s Settings > General > Software Update and let it refresh. You should then be able to update. Just make sure your phone is either plugged in or has over 50% charge when you go to install it.

Let’s dive in to what’s new in iOS 16 and how to make the most of it. But first, double check your iPhone is one of the ones listed below. If it’s an iPhone 8 or newer, it is likely compatible with iOS 16 – or if you’ve just landed a shiny new iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro, it’ll already be installed.

The first four things you should do in iOS 16
There are dozens of new features across iOS 16 to make your iPhone more even more useful, but there are a handful of them that you’ll really want to play around with as soon as the update has been installed.
Set up your new personalised lock screen, wallpaper and widgets
Perhaps the biggest update in iOS 16 is how it handles your lock screen. You can showcase your favourite photos, customise font styles and display a set of widgets to get information at a glance.
Widgets on the Lock Screen let you quickly glance at data like the weather, calendar events, date, time zones, alarms, battery level, Activity ring progress and more from your favourite apps.
You can also now create different Lock Screens, each with a unique backdrop and style, and easily switch between them. Browse a gallery of wallpapers with suggested photos and themed collections for inspiration. It’s a simple as making a long-press on your lock screen.
Customise your Focus modes
With Focus filters, apps like Calendar, Mail, Messages and Safari can display only the content that is relevant to your Focus, helping you to find better balance.
A new streamlined setup for Focus lets you select the apps and people you want to receive notifications from by either allowing them or silencing them. Connect your Lock Screen to your Focus so the look and feel of your iPhone match how you want to use it in the moment.
And to change between your Focus modes, all you need to do is swipe – go from your Personal Focus to your Work Focus with widgets showing upcoming meetings and to-do lists.
Try turning on your battery percentage
This one is pure personal preference. If you’re the type who must know exactly how much power they have left for the day, then give this a try.
Jump into your Settings > Battery and turn on Battery Percentage. Or if you’re like me and like to live on the edge, just keep everything as is.
Feel haptic feedback when typing
If you’re someone who still misses the feel of the keys as you typed on your old BlackBerry, the addition of haptic feedback to the keyboard on your iPhone could help fill some of that gap. Using the same little vibration motors that alert you to notifications, your iPhone will give tiny vibrates around the virtual key you’re typing on to give a bit of tactile feedback.
It’s turned off by default, but can be turned on by going into Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback and toggling whether you’d like sound, haptic or no feedback when typing.
Hidden iOS 16 features you may not know about
Now that you’ve sorted out the new headline feature updates, you can dig in a little deeper, and with iOS 16 there are a quite a few new useful “oh that’s cool!” updates across the board that might not be as immediately obvious.
Live Text
Using on-device intelligence, Live Text can now recognise text in videos across the system. You can pause a video on any frame to interact with text and take quick action, such as copy and paste, translate, convert currency and more. Perfect for taking notes off a lecture or presentation.
Visual Look Up
Tap and hold part of an image to lift it from the background and place it in apps like Messages. It can also recognise birds, insects, spiders and statues, to quickly pull objects and info out of an image.
Apple Pay Order Tracking
This lets you receive detailed receipts and order tracking information in Wallet for Apple Pay purchases with participating merchants – so now you can have your payment and orders in the one place.
Edit and unsend with iMessage
You can now edit a message you just sent or unsend a recent message altogether. And you can mark a message as unread if you can’t respond in the moment and want to come back to it later
Find and remove duplicate images
The latest Photos app in iOS 16 can find duplicate photos and videos in your photo library and places them in a new Duplicates album. You can then merge duplicate photos and videos to save a bunch of space on your iPhone and clean up your library. Just tap into the Duplicates album below Utilities in Photos and tap on Merge to combine the duplicates.
