There was a time when utilizing my sick leaves or multiple hair strands falling off my scalp were the last of my worries. I was young and happy and enthusiastic about every new day. Especially the weekends. Especially when I was anticipating a telecast of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai & Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham on TV.
I have ‘cheater cheater cheater, Rahul is a cheater’ & ‘Oh hello Mrs. Sprightly’ tattooed in the crevices of my brain. And not to brag, but I am a connoisseur of sorts. The indisputable cultural impact of her character portrayals is celebrated to this very day. From Simran in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge to Anjali in KKHH, Kajol’s evergreen fame brings me to a notable observation, one on the sartorial ground.
Her styling in the 90s was phenomenal. Not to say she lacks in any capacity today, she’s equally if not more stylish & confident in her own skin now. From movie costumes to runway appearances, Pinterest is crammed with throwback images from Kajol’s early days.
We did some digging & here’s a little blast from the past:
That Teal Dress
Ahem. This sultry, satin halter neck dress with a high slit had to be at the top. Responsible for spawning countless trends & modifications of this very silhouette, DDLJs costume styling on the whole, blessed us with many gems. Ones we cherish to this day.
Raincoats Are Out Of Business
While there might be no one in my khwaabs (thank the gods), nothing’s going to stop me from living my best life, ma cherie. Just like Kajol’s blithe dancing number in the rain. On the fashion front, this fit is quite in trend now, seeing how the fashion girlies are treating the noughties as their personal fashion Bible. Also, a skincare routine would be appreciated @kajol. Just saying.
Anjali-core
#justicefortomboyanjali
I will not get into the agonizing details of how she was wronged, but I will lend my full support to that bob. It was the 90s for god’s sake. Constructs of feminity were fragile (jokes on me – they still are). But the haircut & styling did a great job at trying to promote a different route, in terms of unconventional dressing even though he ended up falling for her only in her bhartiya naari era.
I Only Play Basketball In Saris
No description needed. Iconic as ever. If losing takes a toll on you, please hide your basketballs. Merci.
Baby Braids Enthusiast
Dopamine dressing what? She definitely looks like sunshine in human form, wearing this particular ensemble. Undoubtedly one of Kajol’s adorablest (I know that’s not a word) looks. Seems like Dua Lipa & Hailey Bieber are just following in her footsteps with the baby braids saga continuing even today.
Crochet Is My Forte
I’ve bid adieu to all my blues & it’s you time cheer up as well. And if this blue crochet beret can’t help you, then I don’t know what will. To the chunky rings – we see you & appreciate you.
Layering & Smirking
The tangerine blazer & the smocked white crop top – did a stylist from the 2010s time travel? Because this look was WAY ahead of its time. Plus the scarf looks like something fresh of the recent runway presentation of Fendace. A true gem.
