Since the Krishna Jayanti/Janmasthami weekend has followed the Independence day weekend in India, theater audience had a handful but versatile selection of movies to choose from this week. A quick gist of the new movies in cinemas and how they have fared:
- Thiruchitrambalam [Tamil] : Dhanush plays a food delivery executive with an existential crisis, a dysfunctional family and a girl-best friend in this rom-com, which makes for a breezy watch. Strong performances from Dhanush, Nithya Menen, Bharathiraja and Prakash Raj additionally aide this Mithran Jawahar directorial [Movie Review].
- Nope [English]: This film is comedian turned Oscar winning filmmaker Jordan Peele’s third after Get Out (2017) and Us (2019) and has only just released in India. Peele has come up with a wacky slow-burner this time, and it tells the tale of how two siblings experienced with a ranch of horses, chance upon an UFO and bring it to control amidst the greed for spectacle and exploitation. The movie stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, Michael Wincott, Brandon Perea among others.
- Dobaaraa [Hindi]: Also stylized 2: 12, Dobaaraa is an official Indian adaptation of the 2018 Spanish movie Mirage. The mystery drama directed by Anurag Kashyap stars Taapsee Pannu in yet another time-loop situation, and she faces the challenge of saving a 12 year old’s life this time [as opposed to saving her own in the 2019 film Game Over]. Makes for a one-time watch.
- Others: Children’s animated movie Ekans: Snakes Awake! Hero Ek Villian Anek which is based on a cartoon of the same name is also running in theaters this week in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Lesser known films such as the mystery thriller Maataraani Mounamidhi (Telugu) and the romantic horror thriller Mayathirai (Tamil) are also running in cinemas currently.
