Cinematographer Karm Chawla, known for his work in Ulidavaru Kandantebecomes the director of the upcoming sports drama, 10. The former launched the project four years ago with much excitement, but the pandemic and other factors caused numerous obstacles. 10, backed by Pushkar Films, finally releases this week. “Honestly, if not in theaters, I thought it would be released on OTT. I knew it would materialize, but I stopped pursuing it after a while because I knew it wasn’t right of me to pursue something if it wasn’t the right time. I’m glad it’s coming to theaters. Having said that, I also believe that one has to know how to separate from personal experiences like creativity,” he says.

Karm always knew that there was always a director in him and he started directing plays and short films in 2017. “I had even done a temporary camp in Mumbai with the hope of trying my hands at becoming a director. However, I didn’t find the job of AD (Assistant Director) very constructive and I personally felt that I needed to acquire technical skills as well before starting full-fledged management. I’ve been writing screenplays for a long time. Some almost materialized and some were shelved early on. My directorial debut, 10 came to me right after I completed my DoP work Avane Srimanarayana,” he says.

Is being a cinematographer an extra skill for a director? “It feels completely different. Today there is clarity about each skill and we understand who does what work, which was not the case 13 years ago when I started my career. Not coming from a film background, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It took me a while to figure out what I was interested in and that’s how my cinematic journey began,” says Karm, adding, “Today, if you ask me, I’m very much a cinematographer. I love cinema in general. Since I have directed plays and short films, I thought I should try directing a feature film.

10, which was written by Karm, revolves around boxing. “I personally love sports very much. I have a good friend who was a national level boxer in college and I used to go watch his matches. We all grew up watching Rockyand Raging bull. The script came to life ten years ago when I wanted to tell a story about a boxer and the first draft was ready. It finally materialized four years ago when producer Pushkar and actor Vinay Rajkumar came on board. Then we revisited the theme again and came up with the final draft.”

Although the film is shot in a realistic manner, Karm claims that 10 not based on true incidents. “10 is about a boxer played by Vinay and his relationship with a trainer played by Gopal Krishna Deshpande. Struggle of personal ego is one of the aspects of this boxing film and also starring Anusha Ranganath and Saven Hegde in pivotal roles,” he says.

Karm has previously collaborated with Vinay Rajkumar in the film, Run Antony, who filmed for 20 days. Describing his lead role as a hard-working actor, Karm says, “There is an intrigue factor in Vinay. He is open to suggestions and is a savvy actor. Once he realized I wasn’t looking for an over-dramatic performance, he did just that. He trains for boxing for 5 to 6 months and despite the grueling schedule he also works on his looks. He lost 20 kg and grew a beard. He was very excited to fight this character. We didn’t fake any of the boxing scenes and we had a trainer on hand during the making of the film.

In summing up, Karm shares this 10 will always hold a special place in his career. “This is a personal film and an emotional project. It has been a very beautiful journey,” says Karm, who is currently busy working on three back-to-back Telugu films. “I am waiting for director Sachin Ravi’s next film to start. I am also part of Rakshit Shetty’s Richard Anthony, which is in the preparation stage. I have also featured several stories on various digital platforms. Likewise, I would be happy to take the lead when the time is right and everything falls into place,” he says.
