If runways are where fashion is born, the red carpets are where it ought to be celebrated. But if last night’s award show is anything to go by, the latter is no longer once it was, at least as far as fashion is concerned.

Why last evening’s red carpet looks were mostly disappointing
The much-awaited 67th Filmfare Awards took place on Tuesday. It’s that night of the year when the entire film industry comes together under one roof to honour the best of films, with everyone dressed in the best they’ve got. But when it comes to making a mark sartorially, this time, most stars left us disappointed.

We don’t hate gowns but seeing these stars in satin and velvet dresses was not the serotonin boost we were looking for. If Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhu’s blue gown looked tacky, Taapsee Pannu’s multi-hued halter neck was confusing at best (Why that free-flowing dupatta-like fabric at the back of that voluminous skirt?)
Red velvet gowns should have no place on the red carpet in 2022

Kudos to Kriti Sanon for her act in Mimi, but we refuse to believe that a red velvet gown with a basic bodice is the best she could have pulled off. It seemed like such a missed opportunity for a diva who is almost every designers’ favourite muse.
Disha Patani, the fashionista single-handedly responsible for bringing back the low-rise pants, turned up in a black latex dress with the kind of heels that we’d want to forget about ASAP.
Is it only the airport looks that matter?
Such underwhelming looks warrant some questions—do celebs not care anymore or is it the stylists? Are they so done dressing up for the grocery runs and airport looks that the red carpet doesn’t attract them enough? It’s understandable that many times we slip into an outfit and regret it later, but why are so many of them failing to make a mark?

Sure, they have an army of people at their disposal and they can collaborate with big fashion houses for a look worth remembering, but all we end up getting are unmemorable recreations of international red carpet looks or just boring, unflattering silhouettes. Are these the same celebrities whose off-duty looks make us want to raid their closets?
If you believed that months and months spent mostly at home due to the Covid-induced lockdown and restrictions had celebs hankering for as much glamour as they can channel, you were wrong. And so were we.
For now, let’s just go back to the ‘airport lewks’ to relive some of the better fashion moments in recent memory.
