This week is off to a great start as South film fans have several reasons to celebrate. Two big releases Thalapathy Vijay’s Varisu and Thala Ajith’s Thunivu have been vying for the attention of their fans. The Tamil film industry is witnessing a box office clash. Vijay’s family entertainer Varisu beat Thala Ajith’s action film Thunivu. Directed by Vamshi Paidipally, Varisu is speculated to have earned Rs 26.5 crore on its opening day, while early estimates suggest Tunivu has earned Rs 26 crore.
According to Sacnilk, the movie Thunivu earned Rs. 17 crore in Tamil Nadu while it collected Rs 5 crore in Karnataka and Rs 3.5 crore in Kerala. The film managed to collect 67% occupancy on its first day of release. If reports are to be believed then tickets have already been pre-sold worth Rs. 7 crores. Thunivu and Varisu received mixed reviews but screens were heavily divided between Vijay’s film.

Vijay’s last released film Beast was made on a big budget but the film failed to win hearts. While Ajith’s last film Valimai released last year earned around Rs 50 crore worldwide. Last year South films dominated the industry and managed to strike the right chords among the audience with their films like RRR, Kantara etc.
