The Trial – Pyaar, Kaanoon, Dhokha isn’t without a chink or two in its armour, but consistent performances and conceptual clarity make the show more than just passably engaging.

By the fifth episode, though, things do start settling down, and Kajol feels much more in her groove. For the second season, can we expect smoother writing, less choppy situations, and please, none of those sonorous voice-overs which feel like they were written as bumper-sticker lines to the wise?

While the story occasionally takes convenient turns as it progresses towards a predictable climax, the screenplay does contain a few shocking moments. However, with its brilliant starcast, this one could have raised the bar for such legal dramas much higher, making it a sharper and a more compelling watch. We rest our case.

Despite the uneven treatment, ‘The Trial’ manages to keep you hooked thanks to its ensemble cast. If you have watched ‘The Good Wife’, then ‘The Trial’ seems like a pale version of the original. But if you watch it with a new approach, it has moments that sparkle.

The Trial could’ve been so much more about the pyaar, kanoon, and dhokha, but it is reduced to just another crime-drama that makes a lot of noise but lacks substance.

Creative liberties apart, The Trial is a decently written series you’d binge watch. The final episode twist offers enough fodder to keep you longing for a power-packed Season 2, if there is one.

The Trial, by no means, is extraordinary, yet it keeps you interested in the characters and their lives and emerges as a good example of basic storytelling done right.

The structure of The Trial is a huge problem. It’s more of a new episode, new case format where a main track of Noyonika and her personal life keeps running, with new cases popping up every now and then. The problem here is that the CID level of treatment doesn’t let us connect to anything, as it keeps running on the fast track. There is no pause for Noyonika where she can just be and let the world sink in.
