movie: dobaaraa
Dobaaraa Cast: Taapsee Pannu, Rahul Bhat, Pavail Gulati
Directed by Dobaaraa: Anurag Kashyap
Where to watch: In the theaters
After Manmarziyaan, Anurag Kashyap and Taapsee Pannu teamed up for Dobaaraa. The 2018 release was a decent film and performed reasonably well at the box office. Dobaaraa is a thriller and a remake of the Spanish film Mirage. The trailer grabbed everyone’s attention and even though Taapsee and Anurag did their best to promote the film, the buzz around it was low. Dobaaraa hit the big screens today. So, is it worth your time and money? Find out in our Dobaaraa review below…
What are you talking about
Antara (Taapsee Pannu) and Vikas (Rahul Bhatt) are married and have a daughter named Avanti. The couple moves into a new house and discovers an old TV and camcorder from the 90s that belong to Anai (Pankaj Rajput), a child who lived in this house years ago. Anai witnesses a murder committed in the neighborhood. One night there is a terrible storm that happens once every 10 years, and that night Antara connects with Anai (in the past). What happens next after these two lives from different eras come together forms the rest of the story…
What’s new
When you watch a suspense thriller, you want to be hooked on the screens and you don’t want a predictable plot; Dobaaraa clearly suggests this. As you watch the film, you might think that this is going to be the tension and maybe predict a few things, but when the tension is revealed, you are stunned.
Anurag Kashyap knows how to get the best out of his actors and of course there is Taapsee Pannu who is known for strong performances. Taapsee and Saswata Chatterjee impress us with their acts. Pavil Gulati steals the show whenever he comes on screen.
The two biggest factors that impress us a lot are the editing and the background score. Such films really require crisp editing and the background score creates the perfect thriller feel.

What is not
Although the film is not predictable and keeps us hooked, it is more like an OTT product. Anurag Kashyap has done several OTT projects and he narrates Dobaaraa in the same way. We can’t call it one of the director’s best works and there are loopholes that leave us with question marks; something we don’t expect from an Anurag Kashyap film.
BL Judgment
Dobaaraa is a good movie but it feels OTT. Perhaps skipping a theatrical release would be a better option for the makers.
